Hy guys,

Any experiences with .338 LM are wery appreciate.
Actually I reload with N165 and N560; lapua bras, federal 215 primers, Sierra MK 250 gr

I'm looking for the best reload to hit the gong at 1500-2000 m

250s at 2950+ fps should be a good start, otherwise the 300s if you have the twist. They should fly better.

I can only shoot out to 1022 yds, so I don't need to load hot and burn my throat out prematurely. I've had good results in my Sako TRG-42 with both the 250 Scenars and SMKs using Hodgdon 4831sc @ 85.5-87grs and VV-165 and VV-170. I've also tried Hodgdon H-1000. For me, 2825-2850 fps is enough out to that distance and in windy conditions, hitting 8" round plates at 1022 yds, isn't that hard using ~28-29 MOA.

Hodgdon Retumbo and RL-25 are two other powders that work well with the 250s and 300s.

Re: Reload .338 LM

Ive had my best results with the 250gr Scenar with VVN560.

Work up from 85.0grs. Ive gone as much as 90.0 without seeing flat primers or stiff bolt lift.

Also had good luck with H4831. Start at 85.0 also.

Lapua brass
F215 mag match

For the 300gr. stuff, Retumbo has worked the best with RL-25 also real good.

That's some fancy powder you pick there my friend. Last I look, N560 goes for about $30 a pound. You know with the 338LM a pound doesn't go too far. Any way, what's the stick?

I use RL25 250 scenars and 300 SMK in my AIAWSM. 94.5 grains of RL25 for the 250 scenar and 91.5 grains for the 300 SMK.

Here is a picture of the metal target at 1575 yards using the 250 scenars.

Mine need's 21.25 @ a 1000 with a 100 yard zero, @ 4600
uncorrected with 250 scenar @ 2890. My 308 28.50 155 scenar 2925. I wouldn't think elevation would make more than 4-5 MOA difference assuming you are @ sea level.

I just plugged in 2900 fps with a Scenar at 4600'/80*/5mph 90* wind and it's showing 22.98 MOA on my freebie ModernBallistics program, so I don't know what's up with the differences.

My rounds were probalby closer to 2825 at the time and IIRC the Scenars at 28 MOA were a tad flatter than the SMKs, at 29ish.

My recommended load is 88.0 +/- 0.5 grains (this means 87.5 - 88.5) of VihtaVuori N-165 powder using 250 grain Sierra Match King bullets and LAPUA (and ONLY Lapua) brass. Shot some of the best groups of my life using this load and an off the shelf, unmodified SAKO TRG-42.

Ehi, wery nice shot!!

Unfortunately in Italy I can't buy Retumbo...Only Vihtavuori and Hodgon for.338.
Do you prefer Sierra Mk or Scenar?

Why?
The Lapua are better than Norma?
For me Norma are more expensive than Lapua but my buddy says that Norma are better.

I started with 20 new Norma and 80 new Lapua, had a Norma neck split after two cycles and I'm now on like nine cycles with the Lapua with no issues.

A Norma case by my measurement, is about 10-12 grains heavier, but I would buy the Lapua. It's good hard brass and they helped to invent the cartridge.

I have had much better brass life and overall accuracy using Lapua brass and resorted to just getting rid of the Norma brass.

This picture is of five progressively larger loads of VihtaVuori N-165 and 250 grain SMK's. Load group 1 is 87.0 grains, load group 2 is 87.5 grains, load group 3 is 88.0 grains, load group 4 is 88.5 grains and load group 5 is 89.0 grains. The 88.0 grains (+/- 0.5 grains) of N-165 is the sweet spot for that particular rifle (SAKO TRG-42).

By the way, these groups were fired a 600 yards at Cascade Rifle and Pistol Club in Ravensdale, Wa. The wind was gusting to the point that the shooter next to me was firing 16" groups (with his accurized Remington 700 PSS .308) instead of his normal 3 inch groups. The only other rifle that shot well that day was a 6mm XC shooting 115 grain DTAC's.

Still, this .338 LM load fired the best of all the rifles out there that day.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, most rounds tend to be the most accurate at slower than max speeds. I guess it doesn't matter how fast the bullet is going if you don't hit what you're shooting at.

BTW--Nice groups!
