Hi everyone.
I just recently received my new .284 win from my gunsmith and have a few questions about reloading for it. I have already e-mailed my gunsmith but it can take up to a week to hear back from him, so I thought i would get your guy's input as well.
first of all I am using winchester brass, (I was lucky enough to find 150 shells at shop in idaho) and have redding bushing dies. When I started to do some load development for it I noticed how tight the winchester brass is, some seem to fit just fine and some not so easy. I have bushing sizes of .309 to .311 when i use the .309 pretty much all the brass fits in it good. but according redding that is a bit more than they say i need. A loaded round measures about .314 around the neck. so shouldn't i be using about a .312? Is it ok to use a .309 or is that too much? So do you think maybe the chamber was cut for Lapua brass? Also I have a neck turning tool which will be here in a few days...maybe thats all I need? I appreciate your feedback.
Thanks, mason

Which bushing you use to neck size won't affect how the cartridges chamber.

You need to inquire with your gunsmith, and find out exactly what the specs are on the reamer he used to cut your chamber.

284 has been THOROUGHLY wildcatted and hotrodded over the years, and there are a lot of different reamers out there with all kinds of different specs.

I should have mentioned:

A new, FLS'd WW-Super 284win case with bullet seated should drop right in/out of your chamber with NO fuss whatsoever, provided you're not jamming the bullet. If it doesn't, your chamber's neck diameter is likely small, which is relatively common in 284 reamers.

The ass end of Lapua 6.5-284 is actually a little bigger than WWSuper/Win SuperX, so that isn't the problem.

Another thing is most WW 284 brass I've seen has a gnarly burr on the case mouth. Be sure that isn't causing the issue.

The new brass had been FL sized and deburred, about 8 out of 50 are very tight. Although I do remember my smith told me his reamer is from ptg and the same one that Brian Litz designed. Don't know if that helps. I'm still waiting to hear back from him.
