Hey all,

I'm looking at getting in to loading my own rounds, and was wondering what kit, manufacturer, or anything like that to help get me started. Like I said, I know very little about this, infact I just bought my first reloading handbook today. I was looking at the Lee Breech Lock Challenger Kit. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Re: Reloading feedback

Something to keep in mind. This is one of those hobbies that you do indeed get what you pay for. My advise is to get the best quality you can possibly afford.

Good luck.

Re: Reloading feedback

If you buy the Lee kit you will be sorry you did down the road. Trust me. Go with a better quality kit like Rcbs or Redding. I bought the same kit and now guess what...the only thing I use out of the whole kit is the powder throw and hand primer. The powder throw will be the next thing to replace. If you cant afford to get the quality do yourself a favor and save your coin till you can. You will be a much happier camper in the long run.

Re: Reloading feedback

The Lee presses I've delt with all had a problem with the leverage and linkage. It seems it takes a lot more pressure to full length size than with other presses.

Now because the half dozen or so Lee presses I've delt with weren't up to parr, doesn't mean they are all bad. Just the ones I ended up with.

Actually some of the Lee tools are very good quality. I really like the decapping punches and base. Also the Auto-Prime priming tool. It's just the presses I have had a problem with in the past.

The RCBS RockChucker I bought in 1972 is still making good ammo. It's the press I compare all others to.

Re: Reloading feedback

If you get the Lee, just get the Lee Anniversary kit. It costs freaking nothing and you can learn on it. Once you determine what you want in a press and tools, you can upgrade. The kit can then be eBayed separately for parts and you will make money on it.

Re: Reloading feedback

Buy Once, Cry once! Like Victor said "You get what you pay for". However, some of the things that LEE makes is damn good! The decapping die is killer and the perfert powder measure for what it is works rather well. You have one hell of a time cutting a kernel with a perfect powder measure. You will get hundreds of differnet suggestions! Read up and take the plunge.

Re: Reloading feedback

I like the Lee powder scoops and their primer-pocket cleaner. Stay well clear of the scale.

If you do some SEARCHES on the forums, you'll find hundreds of threads on equipment and getting started. I don't see the kits as a smart way to buy.

Forster and Redding make some of the better equipment. The RCBS ChargeMaster Combo is the modern tool for dispensing weighed powder charges. Sinclair sells good accessories, tools, and gauges.

It can all be done with a good press (Redding or Forster), beam scale (RCBS/Ohaus or Redding), Lee powder scoops and Redding trickler, priming tool (Lee and RCBS hand tools are popular), chamfer (VLD for inside), pocket cleaner, Imperial sizing wax, caliper (cheap is OK), and dies (Redding or Forster). Sinclair has some nice caliber-specific loading blocks and funnels.

If you look at the current threads, you'll see that Lee's presses piss people off.

Re: Reloading feedback

I like both models of the Classic Cast Lee presses, the single stage and the turret. I think both are quality units. I have no experience with the earlier models but the two I have I would recommend to anyone. Over the years I've had RCBS Rockchucker, Forster Co-Ax, and Redding. On my bench today are the two Lee presses and two Redding Ultramags.
