So I went down the rabbit hole, trying to find out how old my Rem 1100 20G is. 1st off, WTF were they thinking with the barrel codes for dates?

Anyway, I have a barrel date code of AK, and a serial# of 792XXX. The way I understand it, A=March, K=1941, or 1963, or 1990, or 2016. :ROFLMAO:

I read a couple places that Rem started using a letter prefix with serial numbers in 1968. So, not having a prefix leads me to believe my 1100 is from March 1963. Unless I have it completely screwed up, which is entirely possible.

Any experts on the matter care to chime in?

    TIA!

You"AK" would be March of 1963.

Why cant it be March 1990?
    Well, yes it could be.
    "K" appeared in 1941, 1963 & 1990.

IF the grandfather bequeathed it to the OP in 1960........then it was a 1941. Etc.
    Bequeathed in 1964 ?........then it was a 1941 or a 1963.

That's why ownership or historical provenance of the firearm is important. IF the OP had possession of the shotgun prior of 1990........then it's mutually exclusive.
