Hi, I recently started reloading some 168 and 175gr bullets for my rem 700 and was looking at trying some much lighter bullets but, I see some huge reductions in COAL for these obviously much shorter bullets. Is it correct to assume the location of bullet ogive moves back accordingly giving huge jumps to the bore? If true, wouldnt this big jump be really bad for accuracy? Thanks Help a newbie please.

Yes, but screw OAL. Use the ogive measurements. Your gun already has a ton of Jum baked in to it.

There’s no linear relationship between accuracy and jump to the lands. It’s a myth that loading close to the lands produces better accuracy. A particular bullet may shoot better closer to the lands, or it may shoot better jumped to the lands. You have to test it, but thinking closer is better in every circumstance is just plain wrong. The way trends are swinging right now, you’d be more correct by saying close to the lands is bad. That also happens to be an easier case to support given recent data. Jumped bullets are more forgiving, and almost always produce less extreme spread over large samples sizes.

When I tried loading my 700 "close to the lands" the bullet was falling out of the brass.
The whole point of my post was to not load close to the lands. Did you quote me on accident?
In the way back when I worked up a load for my FN SPR that was a 110 VMAX over some amount of IMR 3031. Damn thing had to be jumping so far to hit the lands but it shot like a house on fire. Shot a groundhog out of an apple tree at about 430 with it. I agree though, it's not a set in stone fact that you have to have the ogive .010" off the lands for one hole groups.
Thanx for replys. Will give it a try with the bigger jump and test different lengths to see what happens.
Like the other posters have said, don't worry too much about jump in a factory 700 barrel. I have one in 308 and have measured a few other barrels for guys that I know and all have had close to .75" of freebore. The biggest issues I've had with those barrels is not necessarily the accuracy but the barrels "walking" a lot after just a few shots.
So far the only bullets that I've been able to reach the lands with on these barrels are the Sierra 165 GKHP's because the ogive on these is so far forward.

'jump to the lands' , is not even relevant consideration in the loading processes of them ...LOL
.308 win. and 110 Vmax's and 47 grain of reloader 10x .. that still my favorite daytime coyote bullet .

Yes, Ive ladder tested and fine with the longer bullets Ive done. My OP was about shorter, much lighter 308 bullets *for varmint shooting, and my head cant get around the fact there will be much more freebore on these to jump. No biggee, just tapping into other peoples experiences who've been there, done that.
