I have a Remington 700 short action & I need to replace my firing pin assembly. I called Pacific Tool Gauge to order & asked what the difference between the steel vs alluminum was. The girl on the phone didn't know. Can anyone tell me which one is better if at all? It is only about a $10 price difference.

Aluminum is lighter in weight and should/does shorten "lock time", which is the interval between the trigger release and the ignition of the primer. This shorter mechanical interval allows less time for the shooter's position/hold to change in relation to the hold he/she had when the shot was broken.

The bolt shroud is either aluminum or steel and has no affect on locktime at all. Many people building lightweight hunting rifles will opt for the aluminum bolt shroud to save weight.

Is the bolt shroud the only aluminum part when one upgrades? I thought the firing pin its self was a lighter weight part, therefore decreasing lock time.

On the reduced lock-time firing pin assembly, the shaft of the pin is aluminum and the tip is steel. There are aluminum and steel bolt shrouds available, but the shroud has no bearing on lock-time. The factory Remington firing pin spring is a 24lb spring, which works well with the lighter firing pin. I would recommend keeping the heavier pin and use an Extra Power (EP) spring. There are two EP springs available, a 28lb and 32lb. I would recommend the 28.

The only pin I'll use is the steel pin (either the factory pin or quality aftermarket) with a 28 lb spring. I've had enough issues with the lighter aluminum pin that I'd rather not use it.

I used the PT&G steel firing pin assembly with a Tubbs spring, was quite happy with the result.

I would not use an Aluminum firing pin. I don't care what the tip is made of.

Order the standard (steel) firing pin assembly from PTG which includes the spring. Either the aluminum or steel shroud will work. Skip the stronger Tubb Spring as you won’t see an appreciable accuracy gain, you will notice a stiffer bolt lift though.

Dry fires are way smoother and I do think locktime is reduced IF you upgrade the spring and pin at the same time.
I also polish the cocking piece(not the sear though).
I've seen aluminum shroud gaul form being bone dry. I use a few drops of tetra grease to lubriucate those 1/2"x13 threads.
Seen the aluminum pin shafts gaul slightly from the same reason(bone dry). I use just enough synthetic lube to put a thin film on the shaft. Graphite powder sounds good for arctic environments.
