i have an older remmy 700 pss and I have adjusted the trigger down pretty light.

However, it is still not "crisp",...has creep in it.

Can the creep be honed / stoned out by a gunsmith or should I just replace the group with a Jewell or something?

on factory triggers....you will not likely get it to the glass rod status unless you have sat on the knee of some salty gunplumber that has made love to many many remmy triggers and maybe even used some aftermarket springs and whipped on a hone job......

Proper sear engagement is a must. Wolfe has some reduced power springs that will bring the weight down and still allow proper sear engagment.
Again, too little sear engagement is dangerous and the gun may fire when you don't want it to.

Re: Rem 700 PSS Trigger Creep

Affirmative,..I was very safe in my adjustments. I did take the engagement down to the point that it would not stay engaged as the bolt was closed and then I started working my way back. I've adjusted the sear engagement to the point that any further reduction could posibly result in a dangerous situation and the thing still has too much creep.

I just didn't want to go out and have to buy a $210 Jewell trigger to get the crisp / light weight that I want. If the thing could be honed / stoned, etc. then I thought I would go that way if it was less expensive.

Re: Rem 700 PSS Trigger Creep

you could have a gunsmith work on it and produce decent results but honestly, the money spent on a jewell is well worth it. They are beautiful triggers that IMO cannot be matched. you will not regret spending money on one.

Re: Rem 700 PSS Trigger Creep

I screw the pretravel(sear engagement) all the way in then cock the rifle(of course make sure it is unloaded)pull on the trigger and start backing the screw out until it snaps. Then put a quarter turn back in and it should be good.Make sure and test it,I usually cock mine and bounce it on the floor and put the safety on squeeze trigger then let off and take safety off to make sure it doesn`t go off.Mine on my 700 223 is set on 1lb 4oz and my model 7 6.5CM I adjusted and polished and it is 14oz.You have to know the gun and what you are using it for and more importantly make sure other people know if they are going to shoot it that it is light. Most people think a 2.5lb trigger is a hair trigger and a gun that can shoot a 3in group at a 100yds is a real shooter!Good luck.

Re: Rem 700 PSS Trigger Creep

I don't try to get a factory Remington trigger much under 2.5#, due to the fact that it was not designed to go there.

If you want to get it nice and crisp..and under 2#..spend $139 on a Rifle Basix and you won't regret it. I run all my Rifle Basix triggers at 28 oz, and they work great.

Re: Rem 700 PSS Trigger Creep

I agree for the most part, the older remmy triggers are GTG. I've adjusted it down enough to be okay for me, but I'm an old 1911 pistol shooter and I HATE the slighted amount of creep in any trigger and my stock remmy trigger has enough to bug the SH-- out of me.

I'm in the middle of my firsty build and spending way outside my budget already so I will more than likely just stick with what I have for the moment,..maybe get a jewell or something else later on.

I don't know why but it makes me feel better to spend money over a long period of time instead of all at once,...call me a dumb A-- but that is just how it is, go figiure.

Re: Rem 700 PSS Trigger Creep

-Flush out the trigger with lighter fluid, which leaves a thin coat of lubricant after evaporating. Remove all traces of factory applied thread-locking compound.

-Close the bolt so it cocks the firing pin.

-Turn the Trigger Engagement Screw in until the firing pin drops. Then back it out roughly 1/2 turn.

-Turn the Over Travel/Trigger Stop screw in until it touches the trigger. Then back it out roughly 1/2 turn.

-Adjust the Trigger Weight/Spring Tension screw to the desired pull setting.

-Adjustments need to be done in this sequence.

-Safety check by closing the bolt while pulling the trigger. Make sure the firing pin does not drop.

-Cycle the safety lever on and off with the bolt cocked to verify the firing pin does not drop.

After reassembly, slam the buttstock onto the ground with the bolt cocked to make sure the firing pin wont drop. Dont be a pussy, give it a nice solid whack.
