Rem. SPS or Gap crusader / Gap 10

First off, I'm new to long range shooting, I have a 100 and 400 yard range at my cabin and am having a blast shooting my 300 win mag.

I have purchased a few guns in the last year, 2 Colt AR 15's, a rem 5r 300 wm, a DPMS LR-308 and a Rem. 700 sps tactical. The only one with a scope so far is the 5r, I put a NF 5.5 x 22 x 50 on it. Now I want to get a 308 set up for cheaper shooting the 300 wm ammo is killing me.

My question is, should I spend the time and money to get my SPS set up (new stock, new trigger, etc...) or now that I know I really like this shooting stuff do I sell the SPS and put the money towards a GAP crusader, or with the political climate we have now possibly the GAP 10? I think either way the GAP's will be better shooters than the SPS with the upgrades.

What about getting rid of the DPMS for the GAP-10 if you want to go that way.

I'm not sure I'd spend a whole lot on the SPS if 400 is the max range you are looking at.

Get the crusader! Point being resale value. Try selling a supped up sps and see where you get. Try selling a crusader and it'll be gone in 5 mins. Not to mention it will literally hit flies at 100 yards. I've done it

After being out of shooting for 10 years, I decided to start up again. I purchased a new SPS to ease back into it at a comfortable investment level. After several months, I decided to upgrade my SPS. All said and done to get it shooting the way I wanted it which included : truing the action, new manners stock, upgraded trigger, new bottom metal, and bedding the action I have nearly $1900 in upgrades not counting the original purchase price.


You should take a step back and reflect on what you are wanting, need, and budget to spend.

1. If you are only going to be shooting under 500 yards, then the SPS upgrades are nominal. Pushing out further without spending a major investment on the SPS it will be challenging. I saw huge changes in accuracy beyond 500, and that started my quest for improvements.

2. What is your budget? Is this an investment to improve your shooting or to have the best. Alot of shooters never push their rifles the distance and have a large investment in them to say I have one of the best. I found out along time ago, if I am going to use it , then spend the money. If it will only come out of the safe 2-3 times a year, then it is a waste of money that could have spent on ammo.

3. Resale. If you will upgrade or change in the future then the GAP will bring a premium while the money invested in the SPS is thin icing on the cake for someone else.

4. Will you use the rifle enough to warrant a huge investment in the GAP? Sitting being a safe queen is a waste. They are made to shoot.

5. Reflect on what you want, need, and the budget for the rifle. Work from there. You will get alot of pinions here, take them into account, look at your want, needs, and desires and decide from there.

Alot of factors come into play on your purchase. I have been there. I wished I had just dropped the money and bought what i wanted to begin with. Now I have the investment in the SPS, and in good conscience can not bring myself to spend more money on something else, till I have shot this one out. I do not regret anything I did to it, but wished I had put more thought into it before biting the bullet and sinking the money into the SPS. The good thing is, I returned to a much loved sport and I had abandoned years ago, and love every minute of it.

you could have GAP build a SPS into a gladius which is a bad ass gun, accomplishes both

i have a GAP 10 and its a absolute laser. really can't go wrong with either. if you only have 400 to play with i would say something along the lines of a gladius would be PERFECT>

There really isn't any budget constraints. The SPS was a impulse buy because I wanted to get into accurate shooting, then along came the Remington 5r 300 WM. I am not one to normally sell any of my guns so resale isn't an issue. I would part with the SPS unless I'll lose my shorts on it. Might be able to sell it to my brother in law and give him a deal on it. I'm just not certain that I want to sink all the money into the SPS and end up with a lemon even with all the upgrades. I shoot every other week and am in the process of finding a range around me that has something farther out than 400 yards. Have even considered keeping the SPS and building it up a little at a time while I shoot the GAP, be it the cursader or 10. I don't want to get rid of the LR-308 as I like the idea of having two semi-auto 308 in the safe. As far as want vs need, Ideally I would like to have both the crusader and GAP 10, just can't afford them both now. One thing I can say is that I do enjoy shooting bolt's better than AR style weapons, there is just something therapeutic about cycling the round manually. Again thank you for your input.

GAP Crusader = Laser

If you have the cash, go for it. Then you will definately be looking for places to shoot past 400

i picked up my crusader off the hide here, and all i can say is wow its such an amazing rifle. ive had a ton of remmys and ill never buy another one after shooting this rifle.

I was in the same boat as you, I have spent just as much, if not more on my remmy to make it what I want. dont get me wrong the thing is amazing, but if I could do it all over, Id be sporting a GAP rifle

Crusader if you have the coin to spend. They are leaps and bounds better then a stock Rem SPS.

I have a Crusader, Gladius, and a Gap 10 all in 308. You cant go wrong with any of these.

I have a Gap Addiction.

buy the crusader....

keep the sps and when funds allow build up a 6.5 creed/.260/6mm with the action.

Do you enjoy working on guns? Or do you just like shooting. There is no question a gap will out perform an sps, so if your looking for a grab and go
System the gap is the way you need to go.

Me personally, I enjoy working on guns which is why I opted to build my own off the remington action.

UN gun treaty being pushed and Obama flat out saying that AR15's only belong on the battlefield not on our city streets. Call me paranoid if you want but I feel there is a chance of another gun and magazine ban. I hope I'm wrong.

Why not buy reloading equipment and then shooting the 300 will be more affordable?

Sell the dpms and get the GAP 10 to go with the 300 and your new reloading equipment. Put a scope on the remington and then shoot all you want for half the price of factory ammo.

GAP all the way. They built me a .243 off of a Remmy. At 400 yards I can hit a hanging 1 inch rubber ducky 3 out of 5 times.

If you can swing it, GAP hands down. Then sell the SPS and the DPMS or one of the Colts, buy a quality optic and you'll have 2 great bolt guns with optics and 2 semi autos.

Learn from others mistakes and get what you really want the first time around. It'll hurt for a bit but buy once, cry once and you'll have exactly what you want instead of stock 700s and Savages piling up in your safe.

Thanks guys for the all the input, I think I'm going to go with the Crusader, and begin hand loading this fall. I can't sell one of the colts as it belongs to my wife. Also think I will keep the 700 put a scope on it and see how it shoots, if it shoots well I will build it up with new stock, trigger, etc. I do like working on guns just haven't done mush of it. This will give me me something to learn by.

I'll see how the DPMS shoots, if it doesn't shoot well, I will sell it and put the money towards a GAP 10.

If you have budget thoughts at all, especially if you are buyng the Crusader, remember glass.
My rule is: good rifle-good glass, best rifle-best glass.

Tell us more of what you wanna do with the rifle.

Gladius: Accurate, could be built off your 700 action, short, handy. Good to 800 or so in 308.

Crusader: Accurate, Templar action, a bit bigger, but still not a "big and heavy" gun. I think it looks better than the Gladius, if looks matter to you. 1000 yard capability in 308.

GAP-10: Extremely accurate for a semi-auto, maybe not quite as much as GAP bolt guns. Very customizable to suit your needs. Can't reload quite as hot, in 308 I'd say 700-900 yards depending on your barrel length.

Also, the GAP-10 is a fair bit cheaper which would give you more money towards glass, if budget is at all of concern.

I would also consider buying a AR15 upper in 6.5 Grendel - this way you can use the lower from one of your existing AR's and cost less money than buying a whole new rifle. This may be an excellent choice since your not shooting out past 400 yards

There is a range in my area that has a 1000 yard lane, I need to check and see if this is available to the public for use. Ideally I want to get out further than 400, with a little work I can probably extend my 400 out to 500. I know of ranges with up to 500 that are accessible.

As far as glass, I was thinking of putting the same Night Force ( NSX 5.5 x 22) on it thats on my 300 WM. I'm used to the NP R1 recital and would probably get the same.

I guess what I'm looking for is an end all accurate rifle that I can use as a base to hone my shooting skills. This would probably be my last purchase for a while, maybe a GAP 10 somewhere down the line. My 300 WM hasn't shot the greatest groups yet but I haven't used any match ammo in it yet, have some on order. Will be purchasing the RCBS rock chuckled supreme kit this fall and begin hand loading.

300wm as a starter rifle? Why kill yourself? I'm sure George will sell you a rifle but almost any precision rifle will be more accurate than the man behind it. I say this not as a slap but a factual observation. Buy the 700 get some training an shoot the barrel out of it then you might get your monies worth out of a GAP rifle.

I originally had a Remington 700, then had work done to it and finally bought a GAP Crusader. I wish I would have just got the Crusader from the start. You will be very happy with it.

Have you seen the Gap-10 Video in the G.A. Precision section. That Gap 10 is a laser and rapid follow up shots. Its making hits at a 1,000 yards seem like childs play.

I'm sure the shooter is great, but nice to know the rifle will do it.
