I just bought my first 243 (factory bull barrel). I am wanting to work up a load for this rifle and wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions for a good and accurate starting point for a hunting round. Thanks

Have you selected the bullet you are wanting to use? What range do you primarily want to focus developing your load around? I am working on the same project, and have selected the Berger 95gr Hunting VLD bullet. However, that particular bullet in my gun setting .0010 into the lands is single feed only. The Berger 95gr Classic Hunter is also a good option if you want the a repeater. Try H4350 or RL-19 if you have any.

I have not selected a bullet I want to use. The area where I hunt there will never be more than a 400-450 yard shot, so I will focus on that range and less. My rifle is a repeater.

I would try to decide which bullet that you want to shoot. This will depend on a lot of things; what game are you hunting. range. You said under 450, that is a long shot for most hunting situations. If this is to be a deer rifle, I would look into a premium bullet at least 85-90 grains. Nosler Partition is very good. Try 4350 with a 95 NP and work up a good accurate load.

My factory Rem 700 .243 varmint special rifle for coyotes.
Bullet: 87gr Hornady V-max coated with Danzac (BC .400) Works well in factory twist barrel but still respectable ballistic co-efficient. Seated just off the lands.
Powder: Reloder 15 Nice consistent velocity avg 3154fps. Follow Alliant Powders website for starting load.
Primer: CCI BR2
Case: Winchester. Notes: Deburr primer hole, Lee collet die for neck sizing, very mild crimp with Lee crimp die. Anneal every 3rd firing.
Results: 3" group at 400 yds.
Notes: Very happy with results considering only modification was glass bed action and adj. trigger. When barrel dies will most likely move to the 6mm XC cartridge just to try something different and use a little less powder down the barrel.
