I ran across this Remington 37 cleaning out my Grandfathers storage unit. She’s in pretty good condition aside from the obvious dents in the stock. It looks like a crack head tried to take a gun lock off of it. Anyways, it’s pretty complete with a 5 round mag. I was thinking about sanding the stock down and refinishing it with linseed oil. It looks like a dark walnut which I think will be nice. Once I actually research the rifle I found it wasn’t as common of a rifle as I assumed. What to y’all think about refinishing the stock? Should I leave it as is? The dings in it hurt me but it is what it is. At least at the end of the day I have an accurate 22.

Not knowing what your skill level is, I'd still recommend refinishing the stock. It's not all that hard, but does take some time to get a good number of coats of oil. I used to use linseed oil many years ago, but find that Tru-Oil (which is linseeed and other oils mixed) is easy to work with and does a great job.

If those dings are mostly "dents" rather than scrapes . . . DON'T "sand" them out. Before any sanding to remove the old finish, apply a damp cloth or paper town to those dents along with a hot iron on top so the steam can raise those dents. Then you can sand without having to remove much wood. You can make that sock look like new.

Have owned a 37 for about 12 years. Find ammo it likes and shoot it. Shooting vintage class , went on to win 23 of 24 matches in a 2 year period. Got away from rimfire for awhile , but now starting back. Enjoy

Great find! If I were in your shoes I'd give it a good cleaning and shoot it as is. These are fantastic old rifles, one day I'd like to find one to go with my Winchester 52's.

Own 2, Rem 37s myself. They see much action though. Wish I could find a replacement trigger on the order of a Trigger Tech for the old 37s. Mine, even though adjusted just don't seem to compare with what's available today.
