I found a local shop that has 2 remington 5R rifles, both in .308. They are asking about $1150.00 each.
I have read a little about this rifle and have a couple of questions.
Is this for the really serious competition shooter?
I am talking to a local seller who has a Remington SPS Varmint .308. I could get that rifle for $450.00. Is the SPS very much less accurate?
If I get the SPS I would replace the stock sooner or later. I held one at Cabela's and it feels- different. I could live with it for a while though.
I would have to buy optics for either rifle.
Whichever rifle I buy will be for more informal shooting. I won't be shooting many matches.

With all that in mind would the SPS be a better choice for me? Is the 5R that much better to be worth the extra cost?
Is that price really reasonable?

Re: Remington 700 5R

I have a 5R and love it. I believe generally it's more accurate but probably not twice-the-money more accurate. You'll probably be fine with the SPS. You can always have it gone over by one of the fine gunsmiths that lurk around here... and probably still not spend $1150.00

Re: Remington 700 5R

I'd get the SPS, replace the stock, get some good glass and drive on. You're probably not gonna be able to tell a huge difference in accuracy.

Good choice. I've got a 5-r and I wouldn't trade it for any other factory stick out there, exept a AI. Mine shoots and stabilizes 175vld real good, is that odd for the twist? I figured it was too heavy for a 11.5 twist.

You won't be upset with the sps. I changed the stock on mine to a dbm with an hs stock and it is shooting less than 2in groups at 200 and 300 yards. It is still brand new but I have put hornady 168 a max's along with jlk 175gr and horn 168 bthpm through it. The amax's and the jlk's shoot about the same with the amax's coming out a little bit better on average. I hope it keeps up. It was pretty windy the other day and it did not shoot 2in groups at 300. It still kept them around 3.5inch's at that distance. It was most likely me though.
