I just bought a Remington 700 stainless 5r mil spec in .308. I haven't fired it yet but will tomorrow. Curious about comments I've heard about Remington factory rifles having excessively long throats I also bought a Sinclair bullet seating depth gauge and measured 3.005". I then took a spent case, slightly squeezed the mouth and inserted a bullet and forced the bolt closed. I pulled it out and measured 3.009". This is excessive isn't it? I want to have magazine length rounds that load close to the rifling. I assume I am into some shortening aren't I?

Mine is pretty long too. I ended up settling on bullets that were more jump tolerant. Berger 185gr Juggs and the 175smk. Im only jumping the SMKs .010 so the OAL dictates single load. I do have another load for the SMK thats magazine length that does quite well. I gave up on the secant style bullets as they were so damn long I didnt have enough length to get firm seating in the case.

My 308 5R shoots 175 SMKs and TMKs extremely well. My O.A.L is 2.815". The rifle doesn't mind a long jump with these bullets and I'm sure that these aren't the only projectiles that will shoot well in the long throat R700s.

I have a 700 5R which originally had a throat of 2.994" which has since gone to 3.001" (with Hornady 178gr BTHP).

Just for grins, I tried loading to a COAL of 2.99, 2.96, 2.93, 2.90. 2.88, 2.86, 2.84, 2.83, 2.82, and 2.81 and 2.80. to see if jumping different amounts made a big difference. To my complete surprise, there was hardly a discernible difference in group size or POI, between the different COALs. I only shot 3 of each length at 100 yards, but I would bet that if all were superimposed on the same target they would still fit inside a 1.5" diameter circle. Wished I had taken a picture of the test targets but unfortunately they are long gone.

Bottom line is I decided to load to a max COAL of 2.815" with any round on this rifle because the box magazine on the rifle could reliably handle anything up to 2.825" but started to glitch at lengths of 2.830" and above. Every bullet I've tried has averaged 3/4 MOA or slightly better.

I wouldn't be worried about long jumps with this rifle (REM 700 5R MilSpec).
