After a hiatus in bolt action rifles, I decided to get a rifle that would be relatively inexpensive to shoot. Since the longest range I have access to is 300 yards, I decided to go with .223 Remington.
The resulting rifle is an older Remington 700 LTR with 1/9 barrel inside JP AMCS chassis. The scope is Leupold 6.5-20 M5 FFP with TMR.
I added the monopod and find that it helps control the rifle better vs using a rear bag. However, due to the way I hold it, the top of my left hand gets battered by the bottom of the stock at recoil.
I was also lucky that the rifle seems to work well with Hornady steel match 55gr. I routinely get sub MOA groups at 100 yards. However, they open up at 200 and 300 yards. Is it me, or is the ammo not doing so well at extended ranges?
100 yard group with Hornady 55gr steel match:
The best ammo for 300 yards appears to be Black Hills 77gr remanufactured SMK with moly coating. The rifle produced 1 MOA group at the distance:
Overall, I'm happy with this combination.
