Hello Hide. Hoping to get a little advice on a budget build. I have a Remington 700 ADL chambered in 300WM. It is currently sitting in a MDT HS3 chassis and has a Timney 510 trigger. The plan has always been to rebarrel it with a heavier profile, then work up a load to shoot out to 1 mile at my local range. However, being a budget rifle I’ve always been hesitant to put a lot of money into the rebarrel. I was considering trying one of the new Outlier prefits made by the Arken Optics guys. With their current sale I can get a 26” fluted for less than $300. My question is, am I correct in assuming it will have a barrel nut, and do you think I’ll have enough clearance for one in the MDT HS3 chassis? I’d also like to know if anyone has experience with the accuracy of those barrels but I’m assuming they are too new for many to have tried them. Another question would be if anyone knows anyone in the Charlotte NC area that could install the barrel for me. I really want to keep this build cheap as possible since it will only be a range toy and I dont shoot competition. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

As a rifle builder and reseller of barrels, we use Douglas for some pre-fit R-700 SA, and see no reason why they would not make a LA for you. We are not the gunsmiths, but send the prefit barrels and actions to the gunsmith, and he installs with our lug. The Douglas is chambered, crowned, and will be profiled to your spec. Gunsmiths have told us that they test the headspace, and mostly make adjustments to the square fit of the action to the lug. No issues. I am impressed, and also impressed with the performance of Douglas. You can buy a better barrel, but this is top 10% and 1/3 the price of Bartlein. I also like Criterion a lot, but would recommend the Douglas over an unproven barrel name. Just me.

As machine shops get better, so do actions and barrels. Arken makes a good scope for the money, but it is all outsourced to Asia. We sell their scopes, and like the scopes and the people, but always slow to adopt a new product from a company outside of their core compentency.

I just put the stock factory Rem 700 in 300 WM 26" barrel ADL, in an aluminum chassis. Get 3.715" steel mags.
Adjust the trigger and your ready to go.
It will definitely go 1 mile, especially if you handload.
I bought the rifle for the action....but decided to shoot it.
It shoots as well as some custom rifles.
Mine loved 200 SMK .715 G1 BC . I ran them to 3280 fps but thats too hot but 3100 to 3150 fps is easily doable.
Ran the 230 SMK to 2960 fps.
That's why the long mag...none of the 3.4" stuff when you csn go 3.7" add lots of slow burning powder.
The rifle was $540 on sale, less than $400 for chassis on sale, mag was about $85.
I did thread the factory Re barrel for for a Precision Armament M4-72, so one can shoot it in comfort.
So for an additional $485 chassis & Mag you can really improve the 300 WM...
The new barrel was removed right after testing for caliber change to 510 whisper.
Too bad your not my neighbor....

Don't rebarrel just because. Shoot it and see if the accuracy is satisfactory and spend your money on ammo. Trying a cheap rebarrel can be the same crap shoot as a factory barrel.

I have no experience with Arken prefits. The barrel nut Remage barrels work fine. The head spacing process is quite simple and does not require that much in terms of tools.

Most of the nut systems don't cause issues with a chassis since the nut is a similar diameter and profile to where the shoulder would be on a conventional barrel.
