Remington 700 SPS M40

I had a Remington 700 sps lying around and wanted to make a little project out of it.

I was browsing gunville's website (gunville.com), came across their Vietnam M40 replica stock and ordered one.

I also ordered a limited edition Redfield 3-9x from SWFA (made by Leopold), got number 149 of 1000.

The stock needed some work. So i took it over to my local gunsmith Jose Somarriba for fitment and a glass bedding. He also gave it a nice oiled finish. The only thing i held off on was cutting the barrel down to 24'', eventually I will get to that seeing as the M40 is 24''.

I am using basic Leupold rings and mount, I eventually want to get the badger ordnance replicas

I also have a timney trigger on the way (I use Timneys on most of my bolt action rifles, I know it may not be true to the USMC spec but I am a fan)

Still a work in progress, I would like to update you guys on the progress. I have never posted before, always loved to read though, and I should of maybe posted this in the vintage section but there is not much action in that section.

Just need to turn down the cocking indicator on the back of the bolt and take same steel wool to the stock. Like it, I will never own the real thing but that rifle would be a bunch of fun to shoot.

They did. They had that commemorative model that sold out like hotcakes, and they never made any more. Bastards. I would buy one today if they came out again.

Your right but they only made about 2000 or so (i could be wrong) and chuck mawhinney made 103 (one for each of his confirmed kills). All were priced thru the roof, especially the signed chuck models. Again I could be wrong with the amount remington made.

Haha Ya man, great car. I love the 2.0T platform. I had a GTI before, 2.0T as well, its amazing what a little bit of software can do to these cars.

cool man. I've batted around the idea of doing something similar. then I just admit that I'm content with my 700P.

what kind of recoil pad did you put on it? the originals had steel buttplates, that apparently resulted in extensive bruising from a long day of shooting.

my vote is for choppin to 24" ...

I was going with the metal plate to begin with but Jose my gunsmith couldn't find one in time, and he convinced me to go with one that would do a better job of absorbing recoil, so he just made me a 1" pad.

Sadly I was expecting the timney trigger yesterday but there was a mix-up with UPS and my package was lost. So I'm waiting on them to re ship it, so it could be another week. Maybe i can find some time and go shoot it before the trigger comes in. I may try and find a nice leather military strap in the meantime as well. keep you guys posted.

Hey just wanted to update you guys, I lucked out and the lost timney trigger got delivered back to my house. I installed it the other night and snapped some pictures of the rifle and the glass bedding job. Hopefully later this week ill get some time to go to the range, so i can update you guys on how it shoots. Until then enjoy some more iphone photos

Very nice, looks like a 700 police with a wood stock. Really digging the short barrel look.

Heres a 4 shot group. With a flyer on right. I was shooting hornady 168gr match ammo. Ill soon make some 168gr and 175gr rounds with sierra/berger tips.

Really nice job on this rifle! It's a cool project I can appreciate. I've thought about doing something like this before and it's cool to see it coming together. I like the way you've done it. It's not too perfect to not enjoy shooting and would be a somewhat practical hunting rifle. I'd sure ask you about it if you showed up at deer camp with it.

I say somewhat practical because I usually hunt with a sporter or a shorter, lighter lever rifle. If I'm hunting from built stand, though, I'd take that one out.

Really cool replica gun. My local shop had one of those M40 rifles in the case and I remember seeing it there. Wasn't into guns at that time and passed on it. Would have been a really cool gun to have now.

I agree entirely! Whenever I go out to the tree stand I usually take my sporter weight rem700 w/ wood tech stock chambered in 7mm mag

I love the way she shoots.

But next year I may take both the wood tech and m40. Ill use the M40 rep in a shooting house for sure.
