Well this is all new to me, as this is my very first post so here it goes...

Being left handed I grew up learning to shoot right handed bolt action rifles. When I turned 15 and saved up enough money I bought my first left handed rifle (Browning A-Bolt .270 stainless stalker) which I have grown to love. Then came the next one which was a Rem 700 SPS Varmint 22-250 in a left handed bolt. This is by far the most accurate gun I own. Next I finally got a Stag Arms left handed AR15 .223. Once I realized that there was such thing as a left handed gun I vowed to never go back to running a bolt with my non trigger (left)hand

I want to get into long range target shooting and I do some occasional coyote and prarie dog hunting. I was looking into researching and purchasing a Rem 700 SPS Tactical in .308 however looking at Remington's website The only model they show in left handed is the SPS Varmint (which I own) and the Compact. I really like the idea of a 20" heavy barrel that the SPS Tactical has.

Does anyone know of a left handed Remington 700 in a .308 with a 20" heavy barrel ?

Thanks for any and all help.

If what you really want is a 20" barrel then just send your gun to a gun smith and have him cut 6" off the barrel and recrown it. They'll probably do it to your varmint for 100$ish I'd think. Then spend the money you were going to spend on a better stock for the stock plastic thing that comes on the varmint.

Or you can get a second varmint to do all this with.

Re: Remington 700 SPS Tactical Left Handed?

Welcome to the world of left handed rifles. Very limited options to choose from. I have a Rem700lh VS in 308. When I bought it the throat was soo long I could put a 168gr SMK on the top of the casing close the bolt and the bullet would come right out with no marks on it. I took it to my gun smith he recut the chamber with a Palma reamer he had and throated it so I can shoot the 175MK at mag length and then re-crowned the barrel and lapped the lugs for less than 100bucks. I always pay in cash that helps with the smaller gun smiths. I always tip also. The guy I use here in ND is hated by so many shooters it is amazing. I get my stuff in and out and great quality others claim they do not get from him.

With all that being said my rifle is a tack driver. It is the best shooting 308 I have. Granted it does have a longer barrel than what you want but I want to shoot it as far as I can. So if you are going to get length cut off you may want to get the chamber recut while you are at it.

Re: Remington 700 SPS Tactical Left Handed?

After I posted my first comment is when I was finally able to find the rem LTR in left handed .308 but getting the barrel chopped off a bit does sound appealing too given the price difference between the varmint and LTR. Thank you for the assistance, much appreciated.

Re: Remington 700 SPS Tactical Left Handed?

I'm a lefty, and I'm pretty much learning to use the righty rifles as a lefty. it began in the army, and has been going on since. it's nice to get love from ambi weapons, but I don't count on it. so I learned how to manipulate the bolt with my right support hand, or my left trigger hand going over the scope.

accuracy doesn't get hurt. perhaps speed a little but, but oh well.

Re: Remington 700 SPS Tactical Left Handed?

I'm a lefty and gave up on buying a factory left handed gun. You will spend more money but by going with a custom action you can do what you want. Stocks are available and there are some good custom actions out there.

Re: Remington 700 SPS Tactical Left Handed?

I'm a lefty too, and not that long ago I was in the same position you are in right now. I did not have the money to go the custom route (which I would have preferred) so my choice came down to the LTR or the Savage FLCP-K. I went with the Savage since it was cheaper and had a lot of extras. The Savage already comes bedded with a heavy free floating fluted barrel and a factory muzzle brake. The trigger is nice and breaks clean, the stock is nice as well (might be a bit flat but a stock pack can fix that), and it has a detachable magazine. I'm really happy with the Savage. I get sub-moa accuracy and I'm a novice shooter and using factory ammo. The gun shoots way better than I can. I know that you might prefer Remington (which is fine since they make great rifles and have been doing it for a very long time) but if you are willing to try new things I doubt you will be disappointed with the FCLP-K. I got mine for $800 and I love it.

Oh and since you live in Wisconsin I'm even willing to let you try it out if you want. If you are anywhere close to Oshkosh I would be more than happy to schedule a range day sometime in May. PM me if interested.

Re: Remington 700 SPS Tactical Left Handed?

dadzic- I looked into the Savage you were talking about it is a very sweet looking stick. Do you shoot at a range on private land or one open to the public? If so how far are you able to shoot there...? I am pretty limited here in Dodge County, but back home I have some friends and family with private farms that I could shoot 600-1000yds. Only problem is trying to get back there with my work schedule. There is a range in Lodi, WI that I believe has a 1000yd range but I know the membership fees can get expensive too.

Re: Remington 700 SPS Tactical Left Handed?

I mostly shoot in Shiocton Wisconsin, they have a range that is open to the public with distances up to 500 yards. The range is free to use, shooters are only asked to pay a $3 dollar range maintenance fee every time they shoot. There is also a 600 yard range in Ripon Wisconsin but I'm currently not a member there. Another range that I know of in this area is the Twin Cities Rod and Gun club, they have ranges from 15 to 300 yards. The 200 and 300 yard ranges are gongs.
