I just bought a 700 SPS Varmint n 308. I'm not reloading but and wanting to get into shooting long distance. I plan on dropping it into a PSS stock and putting a nice piece of glass on it. What are some better factory loads I can get, what do these off the shelf rifles like as far as bullet weight. Like to buy some ammo of the right weight to start off with. Thanks Billy

Re: Remington 700 SPS Varmint accuracy

My son's would only sporadically shoot tighter than 1 MOA, but was a reliably solid 1.5-2 MOA with almost any load.

The throat was something like .25 bullet jump if loaded to book OAL of 2.82. I think it was more, because it was physically impossible to load a 155 Scenar long enough to jam in the lands. The boat-tail would just be touching the mouth of the case.

He even tried them seated a hair more than 1/16 into the case mouth and handled them like eggs for single-load, but that just didn't help.

It's been rebarreled now. Anyone want to buy a 26-inch tubular steel tent stake?

Re: Remington 700 SPS Varmint accuracy

I have SPS 308 and I was worried the 12 twist would not like 175gr bullets but shooting 168 and 175 GMM shows no difference. Muzzle velocity for GMM 175gr is right at 2600fps average, have no idea on 168gr.

I shot about 500 rounds with AE 150gr learning fundamentals before shooting GMM. Back then I was shooting 50 rounds a week almost every week over the winter. Average with AE was 1.5moa until I got to around 300 rounds then they started tightening up to under 1moa. My SPS does not like to have a clean bore. After cleaning with Butches and scrubbing with a brush at 50, 100, 300 and 500 rounds, took many rounds to get real tight again. One quick bore cleaning with a single patch of BBS and Butches Bore Oil from 500 rounds now to 1300 rounds and still shoots tight.

My XMark trigger felt like sand was in it, broke at 5.5 pounds from the factory. My first day out AE was grouping 2.5moa average, I had one or two over 3moa mostly I was jerking the trigger. After about 100 rounds the trigger smoothed up some but upgrading to the RB trigger around 200 rounds was the most improvement for parts breaking clean at 1 pound.

SPS Vermit 308 with HS stock, Rifle Basix LV1K Trigger, Super Sniper 10x and Harris Bipod.

Some of my first groups using Federal GMM. I almost always use 1/4 inch rule graph paper for targets. For some reason, decimal was put in the wrong place.

One of my best 5 shot groups using GMM 175.

Re: Remington 700 SPS Varmint accuracy

For mine it loves fgmm 168 it has probably 2300 rounds through it and it still shoots like a dream. I have mine bedded in a pss stock, badger rail with a USO and a timmney trigger I think I have like 800 into the gun it's self and I couldn't be happier. Mine consistantly shoots the 168 fgmm around .5 moa smallest ever shot was .37 moa usually keeps the .5 moa till around 600 yds and around 1 moa between 600-800. after 800 it gets kind of iffy like 2-3 moa not sure if it the gun or me, but I don't get to shoot that far very often. anyway it usually shoots the 175 black hills into about .75 moa at its smallest.
hope this helps,
Adam
edit mine also likes to be shot dirty I only clean it after 500 rds.

45. 308,

How do you like the super sniper 10x42?
Thinking of getting one too. Can't wait to drop her into it's new chassis. 5R HS Precision, black green web. What do you guys reccomend for break in process?

Re: Remington 700 SPS Varmint accuracy

I like the SS for the coin, Alaska winter was not kind to it though, below zero or so the turrets would become very stiff to stuck and if they moved would not adjust internally, had to use the mildots for hold over but I guess that is what they are far. The biggest complaint is with the turrets, not very solid. I sent my first SS back because there was no indent/click to the ELV, kind of wiggled around and between numbers so it was hard to know exactly what I had dialed. Side focus parallax has some slop to it but start at inf and adjust down or like I would recommend along with most do not get the side parallax. Glass is very clear. Repeatable with the best of them. There are quite a few shooters in south central Alaska area that have one.

I cleaned SPS new bore, shot about 50, cleaned, shot about 50, cleaned then went to around 300 before cleaning, cleaned around 500 and with over 1300, one BBS wet patch and 3 dry down the bore between 500 and 1300 and like I said, shoots best when dirty. It took about 300 rounds to smooth it all out.

Re: Remington 700 SPS Varmint accuracy

They like Fed GM loaded with 175 SMK's.

Handloading for them can be a bitch because the bloody lands are so far away.

I have my 700P rifle (same as a varmint) shooting well. Best group thus far 0.25" inch group at 375 yards! weather was sweet and i did my part that day.

Tried at 400 yards last week, and wind was all over the place... groups werent nearly as nice.

The rifle has good potential for an off the shelf rifle.
