Looking at buying a Remington 700 SS R5 Mil Spec in .308. I had read in some older reviews that Remington was supplying actions with too long head space in these rifles seriously affecting accuracy. Does anyone know if this is still true?

Not sure if its true with that specific model, but it feels like a roll of the dice with any new Remington in recent years. You might get a shooter, you might get a solid 1moa hunting rifle, you never know what you will get. Try and check it out in person before buying.

I have one, but I purchased it back in 08 and it is very accurate! I don't know about todays 5R and build quality? I've had my action trued and a OB MTU barrel put on since. Don't know the pricing on them but for the price maybe that Ruger or Tikka. Very impressed with Tikka action, very smooth and they are extremely accurate! Just a thought, not sure about pricing on them ether. See Franks build threads on both. Impressive! Good luck

I have that rifle with action trued, barrel cut down to 20" mounted in an AICS 1.0 chassis and have shot f-class matches with it out to 1,000 yards....no accuracy issues and chamber is still tight. Might still be the luck of the draw but glad I grabbed mine

I have one......which has since had a makeover. In stock form......it was the most accurate factory rifle I've owned. I purchased mine 6-8 years ago. With FGM 175 gr. SMK's it was an easy 1/2 moa rifle if I did my part. Not sure what the quality is like now....

My 5R has been a 3/4 MOA rifle. I dropped it into a AICS chassis and everything has been great. 175 FGMM is great and my hand loads do just a touch better.

One of my shooting friends has 2 of the stock 5R SS barrel guns - both with a Hogue stock - I think they were an SPR or SS Hunter or whatever but both of those factory guns shoot .5 and a bit less with several brands of factory 168's to 175's. I tried to buy one from him but he wouldn't sell and I understood why. I think they are circa 2011/12 or so. I've seen some 5R barrels that were way worse so I think, again, it may be a bit of "luck of the draw". I'll try a new one if I see it at the "right" price.

I had two- a .308 and a .223, both threaded barrel 20"; the .308 was about a 3/4moa gun; good, but not anything to get crazy excited about. The .223 on the other hand, is easily 1/2moa (prob better, but 1/2 is very safe) with hornady 75gr match. I sold the .308 to help finance my M24. I'm not at all upset about it either.

I don't think you'd be disappointed. But at the same time, with factory chassis and unitized guns available now, for not a whole lot more, I'd likely go that route- the RPR is obviously solid; haven't hear much about the mossberg factory chassis offering.

I have one that I love. It is an awesome factory rifle. It will routinely produce 1/2'' 5 shot groups. One complaint that I have is the recoil. Yes it is only a .308 but the recoil pad from HS is pretty lousy. I fixed mine with a grind to fit Decelerator 1'' pad and balanced the rifle with some lead shot in the stock. Also, like a lot of other people I do not care much for the xmark pro trigger. But I would buy another one in a heart beat.

I have one that has shot very well out to 800 yards. 1/2 to 3/4 MOA consistently with GMM 168 or my handloads with 178gr AMAX. I've done some tweaking along the way including dropping it in a Bell & Carlson Medalist chassis, adding a Timney CE two stage trigger, swapping the stock bolt for PTG one piece, and adding a four port LRI muzzle brake (all gunsmithing done by LRI). Since I'm switching to 6.5x47 Lapua, I will be selling it. Around 2-3k rounds shot on the factory barrel and it's in perfect condition. PM if you're interested. Located in North Texas.
