Remington 700 Varmint at Dick's

I am looking for my first long gun, and am intriqued by long range shooting and a little bit of hunting. Based on my research, the Remington 700 Varmint looks like a pretty good base to start with. Planning on a .308 for use on deer and steel.

Dick's Sporting Goods has a sale on the Varmint right now and I wanted to see if you guys knew anything about whether this was a cheaper model that Remington made for Dick's. It has a cheapo 3x12 scope and it is on sale for $549.

Decent deal?

The price should be better than that. Check the weekly flyer in the store. Not sure when it expired.

There should a couple rebates available both from Remington and Dicks.

Not sure but I doubt that Remington would make a line of cheap rifles for anybody... You could use the receiver and trigger for a build if you don't like the way it shoots. The only question is the barrel. You could get a good one if your lucky. I have three model 700's. all shoot good. Look at a savage they are proven to be accurate right out of the box.
The price is not bad for what your getting. Like I said compare it with a like model savage. Good luck...

The one thing that I have noticed is that the magazine is internal. I am liking your guys' builds that have a detachable magazine. Is there anything different about this action so that I would not be able to put a different stock on it with a real magazine in the future?

the "extra" 50.00 dick's gift card is for future purchases, it can't be put toward the rifle as you didn't get it yet.

the guy behind the counter did mention that if i could wait, the black friday deals are amazing.

they had .223, .22-250, .243, and .308 in stock

the rifle itself does seem pretty nice for a foundation, the varmint barreled action is worth it. has the parkerized type of finish that rusts as you watch it, and is very nose heavy. ditch the scope, as mentioned before you can probably get 50.00ish bucks for it. but other than that, nothing a new stock, optic, rings & base can't cure.

Note that the ADL Varmint does <span style="font-style: italic">not</span> qualify for the $40 Remington rebate! If you check the SKU numbers of the Dick's rifles, you will find that they are not listed on Remington's website, since only the SPS is covered.

I got mine from dicks for 499.99 and mailed the rebate it but never received it. This was almost a year ago. Still not a bad deal. Gun is great, stock is garbage. Mines in a n aics now and with hand loads I'm getting great accuracy.
