Remington 700 VTR

Re: Remington 700 VTR

Well since you asked:

I don't like triangular barrels and I fail to understand how it's somehow better than round one. I don't need a faux muzzle brake on a 223 or 308. And ventholes on the stock are near useless.

So other than throwing away the barrel and stock, it's just a dandy rifle......all IMHO, of course.

Of course I am old curmudgeon, and if your looking to buy a factory Remington, I prefer the LTR, 5R or XCR Tactical to the rather odd looking VTR.

Re: Remington 700 VTR

I have one in .308 and it shoots real well. I consistantly shoot 3/4 to 1 inch groups at a hundred yards. It would probably shoot better with a better operator behind it. I have mine mounted in an AICS chassis, that made a big difference in the way it shoots.

The triangular barrel has 1 advantage @ 2 disadvantages. The advantage is less weight. The disadvantages are less cooling area than an equal diameter round barrel @ internal stresses due to uneven heating expansion which caused my shots to noticeably wander after 3 shots fired in quick succession.
The Star Wars gimmick muzzle brake is as useless as mammaries on a hen.
The trigger is not fully adjustable on the first issue VTRs.

I chopped the ridiculous muzzle brake & recess crowned (1/4") the remaining barrel.
I replaced the factory trigger with a fully adjustable Timney trigger group.
I pillar bedded the action & free floated the barrel in the factory stock.

I bought the gun for deer hunting & very seldom need more than 1 shot so the point of impact wandering after 3 or 4 fast shots is a moot issue.

I have a Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5-10x40 mounted on it & it gives me 1/2-3/4" 3 shot groups with the Nosler Partition 150 grain spitzer bullet over an undisclosed amount of H-Varget powder.

After the rehabilitative surgery I have a quick pointing deer rifle.

Re: Remington 700 VTR

My son has one in .223 we bought three months ago.
Are you sure the barrel is thinner at the round cross-sections, rather than thicker at the flat ones? That's what I was told, anyway...and that would make the barrel heavier, not lighter. Don't know, and have no basis for comparison- just what I was told.

We were very tempted to put it in an H-S stock, but decided to first bed the action it since it only costs a few bucks worth of epoxy to see if it helped. It did- and I ground down the little plastic tabs at the front of the stock to free-float the barrel. Shooting MOA- sometimes better-out of that crappy plastic stock now. And, I just ordered a Timney for him after Mom saw the trigger episode on the Rem 700 the other night...

Haven't pillar bedded it yet, though. Is that something a DIY'er can do with a drill press? I know it needs substantial precision to keep the holes perfectly vertical, doesn't it?
