does anyone know where i can pick up a remington bolt action do they sell just the action or do i have to buy a full riffle and break it down?

Though for that kind of money, you might as well buy a Stiller Predator or similar if you're planning on blueprinting the action. A better bet would be to go to your local Academy or other similar sporting goods store and buy a cheap 700 and sell off everything but the action.

Watch the "Firearms for Sale" section here on the hide. There are stripped actions (no bolts), complete actions, custom actions, and all the way to full custom complete rifles available - you gotta' watch it like a hawk - good deals don't last long. Another route is purchasing a "el cheapo" 700 from WM or Dick's - keep the action and sell the rest.

thanks for all the good advice, i've been wanting to do a build for a long time. i've got a little savage 17hmr i've been practicing the fundamentals with and its time to get something with a little more bite.
Any one have some input on a caliber i should look at i'm thinking the basic 308 i know there are alot more powerful rounds out there with more distance but a truly LR gun will come into the picture after i can shoot a good group out to about 500m

Everyone needs at least one 308. Recoil is moderate and barrel life is excellent.
Do you handload? If not, reasonably priced "match grade" ammo is almost non-existent for other rounds, though it is gradually changing. FGMM 168gr is usually available ~ $1/rd, and sometimes less.

Contact bugholes, here on the 'Hide. He has everything you will need, including factory Remington actions. He is great to deal with too.
