I have been looking for a nice 223 rem to setup in an A-5 and get them up to the same par as my 300WM and 308. Anyway at the funshow this weekend I ran across a nice LE model VSF. 26" barrel fluted stainless , with Remington Police stock (odd combo but it came in the box). The last VSF I picked up was a blued/Tan combo 1x12 twist. Got it home and while making sure my seating depth wasn't to long I noticed the bolt was hard to close. That's when I got to looking into it. I noticed it tore the rim on the shells I ejected then I looked at the bolt face. This gun was spanking new but I didn't really have a good chance to inspect it at the gunshow I guess that's a bad on my part. Either way I did a google search here and apparently the tight extractor thing is a common issue with Rem so I ordered 3 from brownells last night. I am just not sure why the hell they would have broken the edges with what is obviously a dremel tool. When my new extractors get here I will try it out and see if that fixes otherwise I guess I will contact Remy and see about sending it in. Or just pony up the extra bread and get a real smith to fix it.

I would go back to Remington and make them fix it for many reasons and money is the first reason and QC is another and then for other people that may have the same issue Remington is made aware of the issue. It maybe a remote problem or it may be a larger problem. my 2 cents...

Remington and QC in the same sentence? My last two experiences with new Remington purchases say they don't have QC.
Bought a 5R in 300WM that had a bolt face so far from true that it was obvious to these bad eyes. The barrel was full of copper too. And yes, I know it was NIB. It came direct from a distributor to me. Never even shot it. Sold it at a loss.
Last one was a 700 SPS "Tactical" in 223 (1 in 9 twist). I could not close the bolt on a factory load. Inspection with the bore scope revealed a chamber that was so rough and crooked that it could not have been overlooked before leaving the factory. I sent that one back for repair. I also had to pay almost $40 to ship it back! The result was that the replacement would not hold 3" @ 100 yds with any ammo. In fact, it keyholed with anything over 60 gr. bullets. It is currently being rebarreled and chambered in 223AI. No more new Remingtons for me!

I ordered a M700 SPS Tactical in .223 last summer. I had the same problem chambering a round. Once it was chambered, it would go back in okay, but the rims were taking a beating. I finally sent it back to Big Green for a fix. I got it back 2 weeks later. The repair order said they had "blended" the extractor. I guess fitting the extractor is no longer SOP on M700 rifles. I checked it out and it works fine now. Just send your rifle back and left them fix it!

I will call them after I get my new extractors from brownells. I have seen what a remington smith can do here. I think they had thier chance to get it right already so if the new extractors dont fix the problem I will drop it off at a real gunsmith and get it done right. I could ship it to Remy and it might come back fixed but like I said they already had thier chance to get it right. Hell I have gotten Century AK's that were less dremel jockey'ed up than the bolt face of this thing

Are you sure that was a reputable "funshow" dealer? The lugs look worn.....on the front! Whats all the debri all over the bolt? Looks used.

i was about to make a comment about the front of the bolt lugs contacting the breach of the barrel. it looks more than just a light contact when the bolt is pushed all the way forward. it looks like it is actually contacting with pressure like it is being cammed into it.

cant say about the bolt lugs but the debris is brass shavings from the ejector slamming over the rim of the case, and takin brass with it. this is such a common problem its sad.

luckily i didnt have this problem. i had another. the feed lips in the receiver scratch my brass. terrible. puts a lengthwise gouge, not light scratch, running from rim to shoulder

It came from a dealer I see everytime there. They always have tons of remingtons on the tables. I dont remember the name of them and not sure what I have done with the reciept. Either way my A-5 showed up and my new extractors and scope mount should be here today so the little project is coming on together.

"ejector slamming over the rim"?? Huh?? What the hell are you talking about? Hey, I'm no gsmith so please let me know what this common problem is. Didnt think those looked like brass shavings but if they are they are dust like and dont look like little curly shavings that usually come from an ejector swipe.

the "common problem" is exactly as the op described..the ejector tears the rim on cases. ive seen many threads on here and other forums with many people running into the same problem, and ive seen it happen myself with someone elses sps. seems common to me.

and upon second look at the photos, i do think you are right, that does not look like brass shavings. my mistake.

too late, extractors came yesterday and I am not sure why brownells would have a correct part and remy wouldnt but pulled the old one out and installed the new one after I polished it to a mirror finish. Works like a champ. Cost $12.50 if you split the price of the 3 extractors up into a single price shipped. This does seem to be a common problem as I found out when I searched it out.

Only problem I have now is it should be a nice day today and I think I hear the range calling my name.

"ejectors" were never even mentioned in the OP. Maybe you accidentally mistook the word for "extractor", they are not the same which I'm sure you know.

Just my 02 cents worth...

I would definitely check the lug to barrel clearance. As stated above, the lugs ( barrel side )should not be contacting the barrel recess. There should be around .010 clearance between the two........
