Remington SPS-T not extracting...

Kind of a weird situation going on with a remmy 700 sps-t I'm running. It often fails to extract brass cased rounds. I've put about 200 rounds of steel cased wolf through it (55gr fmj) and about 100 rounds of remington umc (55gr) through it.

For some weird reason it often (75-80%) of the time fails to extract the brass cased rounds. You guys got any ideas? I pulled the bolt out and cleaned/lubed the extractor, problem is still happening. Rifle probably has 400 rounds total through it.

Edit: RIght...also it seems to extract steel cased rounds just fine.

Did that Wolf ammo have the lacquer on the cases? If it does, you need to make sure you scrub the chamber really good. That lacquer can build up in the chamber. That's the only thing I can think of.

Steel cased ammo does NOT leave lacquer in the chamber. If anything, it will leave the chamber dirtier than it would with brass cased ammo because it doesn't seal up as tightly.

If your rifle will reliably extract the steel cased stuff, but won't extract the brass cased ammo, it may be because the steel is harder than the brass or that the steel cased stuff has a slightly larger diameter case head than the brass cased ammo that you are using.

Have you tried a different brand of ammo?

In any case, my 700 came out of the box with a bad extractor. It would extract the brass from the chamber, but wouldn't hold onto it long enough for the ejector to do its thing. It would just leave the extracted brass just sitting there on the mag follower.

Replacing the extractor is really easy to do and cheap. I wouldn't send it in. The low cost of a replacement extractor isn't worth the hassle of sending it in to Remington.

Actually this is exactly what it does. I suppose I incorrectly phrased my post due to ignorance. It does extract the brass, it just leaves it sitting on top of the mag follower/loaded rounds. It almost always manages to send steel cases flying.

I may try replacing it, is that something that I can do easily with common household tools?

My 700P needed a brand new extractor before it had even been fired... it went straight back in for warranty on day 1.

Sucked balls but I wouldnt put up with it.

Brass cases should fling out of the action nicely. If they are just getting dumped back into the action, you need to get it looked at.

I got my extractor from Brownells, but afterwards, I discovered that you can get them cheap enough on ebay too. Changing it was easy. I actually think that there was a video on youtube. It took all of about two minutes.

I know it suck and I know that it will be covered under warranty, but I just fixed mine because I didn't want to be without my rifle.
