I am new to lr, putting together my first rifle, I have been studying the forums here for a while (truly a wealth of knowledge here) and finally bought a new Remington 700 SPS Varmint in .308 26inch heavy with a no brand (very crappy)scope already mounted. I have already ordered a Vortex Viper PST FFP 4-16x50 for it along with Vortex medium rings.

My question is, the gun came with a "split" scope mounting rail, should I be replacing that rail with a full rail or some other type of mount for this rifle?

you should be pretty right for now, you wont have to do it straight straight away. later as you reach longer ranges you might want add rails with say 20 moa slants upward for longer range shooting

Re: Remy 700 SPS Varmint Scope Mount?

Nothing wrong with using two piece mounts, if your rings are true 1913 spec they more than likely won't fit the probably weaver spec bases though. Also when using two piece mounts I would check ring alignment and probably do some lapping.

I wouldn't buy a new base to get any additional MOA unless you need it. But if you have to buy a new base it may as well have some, scopes tend to function better closer to center/further from the extremes of their adjustment.

Also if you need a new base I do suggest one piece, you will sacrifice loading/ejection port access, but it seems less prone to issues, primarily ring alignment, to me. Theoretically it adds some rigidity to the action as well.

Welcome to the hide, good luck with the new rifle.

Thanks guys...I will try this setup for a while, if I find that I need a bit more elevation I will get further info here about a new base.

Now to research lapping the rings.....
