My wife has a friend of a friend who needs to rent a 3/4 ton truck. I happen to have a 3/4 ton truck that is doing exactly nothing at the current time. Anyone ever messed with this? I know its a longshot but if you were to do it what paperwork would be needed? What deposit (i figured a deposit in the amount of my insurance deductible plus some)?

Any thoughts on this? I don't need the money just figured might be able to make some shooting fundage for a couple days of use.

    Re: Renting out your truck?

I have been in the rental business for almost ten years now. Everything from party stuff to big equipment, and budget moving trucks. Personally I would make sure that their insurance would cover them driving you truck. For a deposit I would make them at least cover your deductible and then also make them pay for using the truck in advance. I would charge somewhere around 50 bucks a day plus 79 cents per mile that they drive, and make sure that they fill the truck up with fuel before they bring it back. People love to tear stuff up that they rent, and then when it comes time to fix it they won't pay for it so I would be careful, and note any damage that is already done to the truck and make them sign a paper clarifying the damage that is already there before they leave so that if something does happen there is no excuse of where the dent, scratch, or etc. came from. Set the price and rules for them ahead of time and make sure that they sign a contract. If you want to ask more specific questions or need anything shoot me a PM and I can help you out.

    Re: Renting out your truck?

Unlike Mr Burke, I am NOT in the rental business.
I don't lend OR rent my property to anyone. Not being mean about it, but NO ONE uses your stuff the way YOU use your stuff (see George Carlin about My stuff vs your shit). Rented or borrowed, it does NOT come back the way you last saw it. And not being in business, are you prepared to accept the liability that will come your way if there is a defect causing delay, damage or harm due to your truck's condition?
It will come back dented, empty, with a flat.
On the other hand, if the guy just needs a truck to move, I have often shown up and driven my own truck, and supervised the loading etc.
BTW, he may "Need" this truck for towing, another story all together. Towing over capacity is rife with potential problems, especially if he doesn't have his own weight equalizer hitch, or if your truck is not rigged for towing.
    Take a pass.
PS: a friend of a friend? Take a double pass. the truck is broke down, out of gas, flat tires, not available.

    Re: Renting out your truck?

I have to 3/4 ton Ford Diesels, plus some assorted trailers. I lone them out but don't rent them.

The only problem I had is loaning it to family members, Friends???? never a problem at all.

    Re: Renting out your truck?

Truck is basically a new truck, something like 5,000 miles on it right now, maybe 6.... I took a road trip in it and drove it to my job site in North Dallas a couple of times.

Trying to get more clarification of what this said person would like to use the truck for..

The fact that s/he need a big truck means hauling/towing. I have an F350 diesel and it's worlds different than a car or small truck to the point where I wouldn't trust any joe blow to understand the intricacies much less drive it. Insurance isn't going to cover shit if s/he blows the trans/engine/puts gas in your diesel/etc...

    My vote: Fuck that.

    Re: Renting out your truck?

Brand new truck, $50 a day? Cost of truck > $35,000 - FORGET IT

You go haul it for them....

I'd never loan my truck out, made that mistake ONCE on a motorcycle years ago...it came back in pieces.

what kind of new 3/4 ton truck can you get for $35,000?

My truck was over $50,000 and it isn't a diesel.

    Re: Renting out your truck?

How do you know he's not going to transport a load of dope or do something illegal in it? See this happen a lot on the streets for local drug users barrow or "rent" the vehicle to go buy some drugs. We call them crack rentals. To me it's risky, especially if you don't know him. Too many "what ifs" in a situation like this.

The lady wants to borrow it to pull a toy box trailer to Corpus. Probably gonna pass on it.

My truck was over $50,000 and it isn't a diesel. </div></div>

Went from something like 49k sticker to 32-33k dealing, then added a DVD/Nav system, Remote start, and some other options to bring it back up. I had to get a ST to get the manual floor shifter but was able to add the items I wanted in the more expensive truck (Laramie Longhorn). 2011's were being cleared out at the time.... Ended up giving me 15k for my 2008 truck.. Didn't do to bad on the deal I guess but didn't look at what diesel cost before buying it...

I had a set of Rims in the garage and the wife thought it would be nice to get me new tires for Xmas as she knew I wouldn't drop the dough myself to do it. Would have preferred a different wheel but its the thought that maters I guess....

As it sat for 32k had it a few days before I noticed it didn't have tow mirrors but has the rest of the package.

What a nice guy you are.

I know you are trying ti be funny, but I never understood why many 'men' treat their car or truck better than they do their wife or GF.

A truck is just a truck, they build new ones everyday.

    Re: Renting out your truck?

I have "friends" that appeared once they found out I got a truck, and no less a beater truck at that.

I have a couple buddies that I don't worry about and they can borrow it anytime they want. Standard agreement: It will leave with a full tank, make sure it comes back with a full tank and a case of Yuengling strapped into the passenger side.

These are also guys that I have known for a decade or more and I'm closer to them than most of my family.

The "friends" that appear from nowhere don't get to borrow/rent it, if there's someone in a real fix I will generally try to help them out and go pick it up for them but yeah... no "here's the keys" to those guys.

Mine is also a 5 speed, not an automatic so in the modern world full of people who can't drive a stick it weeds out most who want to borrow it on the first shot.

It is amazing how many 'friends' you have when you have a truck and or trailers or other things they want to borrow.

Funny how they are never around when you need help.

Funny and so very true. I wouldn't do it. All it takes is that one accident or a blown diff, trans, eng, etc. and they can't pay for it and you are screwed. Even if it was not their fault.

Great quote. I've only ever loaned out 2 things, a planer that came back with a dead motor and a truck. That came back running with a low end knock after lending it to a family member for a few months.

From now on I tell people that if they can't afford to buy it, they weren't meant to have it. But I still am willing to haul things for people at times.

    Re: Renting out your truck?

my great grand father always told me that there are three things you never lend out " your pistol, your horse, your wife". I think those were good rules to live by back then and apply to present day life also.

    Re: Renting out your truck?

I ask them if they have enough money to buy whatever it is they want to borrow.

If answer's "no", then I ask them where does that leave me if they wreck it.

If the answer's "yes", I politely tell them to go and buy whatever it is themself.

    Weeds em all out.

    Re: Renting out your truck?

Anyone that I would let borrow my truck is a good enough friend that I'd never think about accepting monetary compensation. A splash of fuel in the tank is always appreciated, as are freshly-baked cookies

Add trailer-towing to the mix, and the list of trusted parties becomes very short. Most truck owners can't be trusted with that task, much less an ocassional borrower.

    Sharp-looking truck, Poke!
