Another fun and challenging Topstraps Longrange Rimfire Challenge match is history. I had 35 entries which is a new record for me, I was wondering if it was slowing down since a few regulars have been absent lately but seems like there is still an interest in it. It still amazes me how much all the shooters skills and equipment have improved. Because shooters can come shoot thru the week and weekend it's not always fair and even conditions for everyone. Some had it really calm, some quite windy and one shot in the middle of rain so hard she had to stop due to winds blowing tree tops down on top of my range shelter and blowing them in front of the benches.
Chris usually shoots Ugly Beddy but he shot the 40X and I shot Ugly Beddy for the first time in a match. She still amazes me how well she shoots for how she looks. My Wife, Charlene shot the Anschutz and did very well but she used to kick my butt at the IHMSA Silhouette matches long ago. She has just started to shoot a scoped rifle and is still learning how to get behind the scope and make the adjustments. Hate to see how well she'd do if she practiced. I didn't include our scores in this match even though Chris and Char shot with others watching.
I thought Keith Baker had the match won till some weird condition at 197 yards took a few of his rounds off target but he has it figured out. There would have been a three way tie for first between Jim Lochary, Tim Humphrey and Mike Moore who really tore the targets up this month. On Sunday Ted Kernik came with his H&R model 12 with crappy Wolf MT and pulled off the win by one target. One of the circles at 197 barely quivered, both spotters verified that but we didn't see any marks. When I went out to paint I inspected that target and there was a small grey spot on the right side and I always give a hit for even a small nicker/quiver.
We had a couple new shooters come try it out and I do hope they come back. Jeff Stull brought his Daughter Megan up with him, this was Jeffs first time at the long distance rimfire stuff and he ran out of adjustment at the 112 yard line. He did very well using hold over which shows he's been around real shooting and can do the holdover thing when needed and do it accurately. Megan took some shots at various targets and I don't think she missed anything she shot at including some shots with Ugly Beddy at the 197 yard line. She also split the bullet on the axe with her first shot so I'm saying that is a World Record for a 10 year old girl, first time shooting a rifle splitting a bullet on an axe at 50 yards.
Keith Baker brought his Son Will and he's gonna be a real contender as he gets older. He has a good teacher, He also split the bullet on the axe on his 7th or 8th shot which I'll bet is another record for the youngest boy to every do it at that distance.
OK, enough rambling about how well everyone shot and on to the scores. Every time a shooter entered the match I put their name in a bowl, after the last shooter shot on Sunday I let Megan pull the two winners for the $25.00 drawings. She pulled out Carl Duvall and Mike Moore. Collect your winnings next match.
Any ties were reverse counted by hits on the farthest and smallest targets. There were 100 targets to shoot at with a bonus target worth 5 points at 195 yards, a small steel disc the same size as a clay pigeon. The shooter had to reset their zero to 50 or 25 yards then use reticle only to hit the target. Quite a few hit it and some had never tried anything like that before.

Don't let the scores fool you, these are really small oddly shaped targets that are really tough. Everyone shot well and I learn from watching every one of them for things they do that might help me. Don't forget to pay attention at the matches, you can always learn from others. Another big thing a lot of shooters do is not spot, you can learn so much by spotting. Learning to read the conditions thru the scope and seeing how the bullet behaves with the different winds and learning to see those subtle shifts can make you a much better shooter. Don't be bashful at the matches, share your time behind a spotting scope and learn to be a good spotter.
Hope to see you all again in September on the third week/weekend. I can be available from Wednesday on. Just remember no tuners or benchrest type rests and the $8.00/50 max cost on ammo.
