The June match was much nicer weather wise than May with having no rain at all but the winds were higher. Friday was terrible, the tops of the trees were going back and forth at least 6 ft and all the trees down both sides of the range were just swirling all different directions. The ones that shot didn't worry too much saying "It is what it is and I'm here to shoot". Saturday was better with Sunday being the calmest but still plenty breezy with wind switching constantly.
This weekend was really slow with only 4 or 5 showing up on Saturday but Sunday was better. Sitting there Saturday had me wondering if shooting matches were fading away since my buddy had a really low turnout at his the weekend before. I thought that if Sunday was a bad as Friday I might take a couple months off since there is a lot I could be doing around the house for those 4 days. Quite a few mentioned that it's hay season here and also a lot of graduation parties and also people on vacations might be happening. I was wondering if the quality ammo shortage and prices may also be influencing the turnout. We'll do another in July and see how it goes. I really do enjoy having the matches and watching others shoot is probably as much fun as actually doing the shooting.
I found little candy dogbones about 1/2" tall by 1/4" wide and thought they'd make a neat "boneus" rack. Started at 87 yards, nope, then 75 yards but kinda maybe but settled on 62 yards. That seemed about right, only one shooter cleaned all five with them being turned different angles with the last one on end pointing at the shooter. Not as big a poof as lollypops but something different.
Saw some good shooting with a couple shooters finally getting all 10 targets (10" down to 1") at 197 yards with 10 shots and got to write their name on the shooting shed ceiling. Good shooting Rich Harris and Herman Crooks. Not many names up there for as many years as I've been having matches. That little 1 inch circle is tough after working your way thru the others as they keep getting smaller.
Free entry winners are Marty Kerr in "B" class and Jeff Wolfe in "C" class. Kurt Yoder would have been the "A" class winner but a lower class "B" shooter beat their score it bumped them. Gotta try harder next time. There are little coupons with your name on them that will be hanging on a nail for you next time.
I had a few new shooters with the farthest travel award going to Jeff Wolfe coming from Indiana. He was visiting and caught a couple shoots while in Ohio. Was a pleasure meeting all the first timers and hope you had fun shooting my little range. All tied scores are settled by reverse count, some had to go back 3 or 4 places to settle. That one extra point or a shot at a gamble target can be so important at the end.
