Stoutsville, Ohio,
Im putting together a rifle for my daughter (shes 10) to shoot with me at some Tac/steel matches the problem is she is left handed right eye dominant. So my question is should I build her a left handed gun or try to get her to shoot RH there are so many more choices with RH parts/Mfg. Im RH left eye dominant and shoot RH (normal

) but my wife is RH right eye dominant and shoots RH. So maybe I just need someone to explain to me were this all comes in to play and what would be best for her. She sholders the gun good bothways but I wish I had access to a LH gun to see how she does working the bolt. Anyways Thanks for any input/advice.

Re: RH, LH, Eye dominant ?

Build the right handed rifle and teach her to shoot with her Dominant eye! Teach her to leave both eyes open while you are at it...
Follow the eye, not the strong hand.

Re: RH, LH, Eye dominant ?

Anyone can shoot well on either side if trained correctly. I would suggest that she may be more comfortable shooting RH, because she will not have conflicting focusing issues. You should teach her to shoot with both eyes open right of the bat.

But, it really boils down to what SHE thinks is more comfortable. If she is comfortable with either, that is a huge step that she will not have to get used to.

You can teach her on either side, and she can re-train her eye dominance. But, starting from scratch, I would say RH (unless she just prefers LH.

Agreed.

Re: RH, LH, Eye dominant ?

It is all a matter of training. I held master card right hand smallbore prone, lost right eye and switched to left hand and now hold master card right hand smallbore and high master highpower.
Took about a month to make the switch, now holding a rifle right handed feels strange. I shoot Mod 70s and reach over the top.
Earl Waterman one of the best Army MTU ever had is lefty but when he joined the Army they forced everyone to learn the M1 right handed.
In l970s he lost the National Highpower Championship to Gary Anderson by one point shooting a stick right handed.
Larry Moore one of the best shooters in history was RH Left eye dominant and he shot left handed and reached over the top to do so. Ray Steele was same way. Both were on Palma Team, Pershing Team and Dewar Team. Only two to ever do so.
If she is strong willed there will be no problem if she works at it.

Went with a RH Sergeon SA in a KMW SENTINEL stock. 24" barrel chambered in 308, Shark suppressor, Tuned Rem trigger, Topped off with a PH 5-25x56. Think thats too much for a 10 year old?...............

Re: RH, LH, Eye dominant ?

left handed, right eye dominant here. I learned to shoot left handed before I heard of the dominant eye thing. Now I'm making myself get comfortable shooting left hand/right eye with pistols, and right hand/right eye with rifles.

Re: RH, LH, Eye dominant ?

Used to shoot a lot of skeet/sporting clays/trap and rifle eye dominance is not nearly the factor here that it would be for shotgun sports...rifle being more deliberate than instinctive I dont think it will matter to much especially since she is new without established habit patterns.

The suppressor sure would be a great way to teach a young un...congrats you can swing it.
