Hello, I'm happy to be a new member. Looking for a little input. I am looking at buying a new rifle. It will be mainly for deer sized animals, but occasionally hogs and varmits. I will also be doing some long range target shooting. Probably more target shooting than anything. The calibers I am considering are the .308, 7mm08 and the .30-06. I am not recoil sensitive. The brands I am interested in are Remington, Howa-Weatherby, Ruger and maybe a Browning or Tikka if my mad money holds out. Any and all suggestions will be accepted graciously.

Re: Rifle and caliber suggestions

I would suggest the Remington 5R in 308 for your purposes. It has a pretty heavy barrel contour for target shooting but not that heavy that you can't take it on a hunt. I had one and it shot clover leaves with 168 gr FGMM. It is a great base rifle to start from if you pursue precision farther.

Re: Rifle and caliber suggestions

I'd recommend a 5R or a Tikka T3. Try to get behind a couple if you can; sometimes that can be done at a training class where there are several rifles and you can compare their feel side by side.

You mention long range target shooting; a quality scope becomes very important to me once I get past 300 yards, and you will likely end up handloading to squeeze more accuracy. I would buy a used Remington 700 that was in good shape and get a good, higher end scope out of the gate (U.S. Optics, NightForce, etc.)

Welcome to the Hide.

Never been let down by a Weatherby Mark V yet, I love the numbers the 300 weatherby mag produces, kinda expensive to shoot but you wont be disappointed.

What is your budget? You'll get the most bang for your buck if you buy used. And if you buy from a trusted member of this or another forum you'll know your not getting a lemon regarding accuracy.
If you'll be shooting a lot and not reloading, get a 308. If reloading, any round will work within reason. (I wouldn't start with a 338 of any sort)
Deer, hogs, and varmints sounds like 260, 7-08, etc.
