    So after spending some time on the phone I have a decision to make and I'm reaching out to my fellow forum members for some advice. This rifle will be used to get into LR shooting and also for a mule deer and elk hunt next year (will also be bringing my 270)

    The savage would be a build.... info below

    Savage LRP target action new: 465.00
    CBI 28" Bull Barrel chambered in 7 RSAUM: 300.00
    action and barrel tools 85.00
    HD CNC recoil lug: 30.00
    HS precision stock: 360.00
    savage factory bottom metal, WSM DBM,trigger guard: 120.00
    Firing pin assembly, mag bolt head, front bolt baffle: 100.00
    tactical bolt handle: 80.00
    shipping: 30.00
    Go gauge:30.00

    Total: 1600


    Or do I just go buy a new or slightly pre loved Remington Sendero 7mm Mag or 7mm RSAUM (assuming they chamber that round)and add a rifle basix trigger for around 1000-1200


    I'm open to other suggestions also.

    Buying the remington would allow me to spend more on Optics.

    I was going to use the Viper PST 6-24 FFP on the savage or I can take that money and what other I have saved on the gun and get a NF.

    There is nothing like a rifle built by you, for you. That being said, you can build remy's and savages. A built savage should one up a remington in untouched condition. I like savages and don't care too much for overpriced rems'. I'm biased,

    I have a Sendero SFII in 7RM and it is a very nice factory rifle. It has no problem shooting sub moa, some times I do though!

    LOL yeah once in a blue moon I get that twitch but for the most part my factory savages and sakos I shoot sub MOA after working up a good load.

    I do agree I wonder if going to a model 10 action and a 284 remington barrel (damn small shank) would still net decent results and save me about 240.00

    The reality is my budget.... I hate not having a money tree.

    I'm in process of building up my savage and it was accurate right out of the box. You could do either one and both should shoot well. also to save some money you could always find a used savage or stevens action to build on. and if youll be hunting with it the bull barrel will probably be way too heavy to carry for longer periods of time.

    Most rifles I own are bull barrels and carrying them for 3-4 miles of walking has never been an issue. I guess being young and in good shape I might as well abuse myself while I can

    I just noticed, $80 for a tactical bolt handle? you can easily get one for less than half that, take a look at sharpshooters supply and Kevin Rayhill over at stockade, they'll do you one for less than $40.

    Please read above post... I can use a model 10 for 350.00 new and save a bit, but I won't get to use the caliber I wanted to as everyone has said they wont chamber a WSM or SAUM in a small shank action. Stock choices are wayyy to limited with a long action for me to even start to consider.

    oh well in that case then go for the target action if you go down the savage road.

    and if you can haul a heavy rifle for miles then go for it and I'm young and pretty fit.. but im also kinda lazy so i would want a lighter rifle for hunting but to each his own.

    I don't think you can go wrong either way and wil enjoy which ever one you decide to get.

    There are plenty of folks running WSMs and SAUMs on small shank Savage actions; hell there are folks running 338 Edges on small shank actions! In fact the very first Savage factory WSM rifles were built on standard shank actions before Savage switched them to large shanks.

    Gun Shack is currently offering an ER Shaw group buy for 26" small shank Savage prefit varmint contour barrels in 7mm, including chamberings for 7 WSM and 7 SAUM. Additionally, over on Savage Shooters it has been reported McGowen will make prefit SAUM/WSM barrels in standard shank, and I'm almost certain Devin Sinner or Kevin Rayhill will build you whatever you want.

    Can Jim @ NSS not get you a standard shank Criterion in 7SAUM?

    Criterion said no, Shilen said no, and ER shaw said no... I called them personally. I understand what you are saying and I used to have one of the first WSM small shanks back in the day. In fact I have tried buying that rifle back from my cousin and he won't unass it....

    I'm just going off of what those barrel makers told me first hand. Jim has been a big help, but he has been puching me to spend more money than I really want to on the base rifle.

    If you want resale value go with Rem 700.

    If you want better out-of-box accuracy go with Savage.

    I used to hate Savages because they were...Savages.

    Until I got one and actually shot it. And then got another and put a Shilen barrel on it.

    I own 2 others now and both are accustocks and hate them... Wish someone would make a new stock for the crap they have on them. Other than the stock they have been great.

    I have never owned a remington... only shot a SPS and thought it would make a better boat paddle than anything else.

    please post a link as i havent found a replacement stock for the accustock rifles...these rifles have the bottom bolt release in the trigger guard.

    fyi, a lot of guys over at savageshooters.com run magnums and short magnums on small shank savages, it works fine. Also Kevin Rayhill at Stockade makes stocks for accustock models, its not on his website (since his site hasn't been updated in years, the guy who built the site for him ditched him and hasn't been updated since). If you give him a call he'll tell you.

    thanks for your thoughts... don't think the 260 fits my needs so sell the barrel at 150...

    cost is 300 for a new barrel so I'm at 1050.00 Plus I can't stand that stock. New stock would be the M24 and its 360 so in the end I'm at 1410 without the tools, and the magnum bolt stuff.... so using your logic it will cost me the same 1600.... I guess I could still sell the HSP it came with for a cost of what....200?



    Now the 10FCP HS Precision looks nice... wonder what that barrel would be worth... would love to find one in 300 Win mag and them I would be done for under 1000.00... well after digging around I may just wait until I can get my hand on the 300WM version of the 110FCP...

    I have a savage model 12 that I installed a LW barrel and upgraded to a B&C stock.

    I don't shoot it anymore, I got a Rem 5R and much prefer it.

    I also have one of the first Rem 7mmRM sendero's made.
    Shoots lights out.

    If you buy a rem 700 adl for 380 bucks, new barrel 300, true action and install barrel 250, B&C M40 stock (made in both SA and LA) 230. Inlet for CDI BM 60, CDI BM 209, AI mag 80 bucks.
    The X mark pro is a serviceable trigger or you can add rifle basix for about 100 bucks.

    You could also go with an HS precision stock for about 100 more.

    Money wise, it is a wash. In my opinion, a trued Rem shoots better than a savage.

    The LRP Savages come with a HS Precison Fiberglass Stock, not Accustock.

    I'm seriously looking at one of these in 6.5 Creedmoor and putting the new Bushnell HDMR on top.

    I have the Savage 10 FCP-HS. I woould be hard-pressed to ever want to buy another gun. Looks and feels great, shoots even better.

    I would go with the Savage. They are much easier to work on yourself. If at anypoint down the road you want to change calibers, you can swap the barrel with out going to a smith to true it. You can build a savage from the ground up with really no gunsmithing experience. You can't do that with a remington.

    Yes you are right. But if you read my post above the stock I want is the HE precision M24 which is not what the lrp is furnished with. If I'm willing to spend the cash I might as well have my cake and eat it to.

    built a .260 on a new Stevens 200 action. Barrel is a 26" Shilen Select Match Grade with a 1:8 twist. Stock is the Bell & Carlson Medalist Tactical and a Ferrell 20moa base.

    With handloads in both, the Savage will outshoot my beloved Rem PSS all day long. Yes I love my PSS, but it will be the last rifle that have on a Remington action if a Savage is available.

    Coke or Pepsi? Ford or Chevy? Shrimp or Lobster? Manners or McMillan? Gas or Deisel? Everyone has their preference so why would you want someone else to decide for you? I would rather have one Remington over two Savages- does that help??

    I used to be a Remy lover and still have a PSS. However, the new Savages are the heat. I sent my 10PC off to be threaded and coated. Savage has out done Remy...

    i have both savage 10 tatical and a remington 700 custom deluxe they both are very accurate and do has they are designed to do savage 308 rem 223.
    in my opinion an action is an action when its bare,in this case i thank its like comparing a stock rifle to a custom built one

    oh wait you guys are

    he just wanted to know if he should buy or build ,on diffrent actions

    no if you would have read the entire posting its all about the overall budget.

    with the savage I can afford a 6-24 PST with the Sendero I can spring for a NF. So no your post didn't help.

    I think I have made my decision

    wait for the 110 FCP HS Precision in a 300WM and still have the $$ for the night force. Then later I can go to a different barrel and I even have a .473 bolt assembly (for parts) to change to what ever chamber I want. Even better it comes with the stock I have been wanting.

    This scenario has been played out over and over and over and bottom line is, pick what's best for you. Make your own decisions. If I came off as a dick I apologize. It's just that similar comparisons come up almost daily here. The rifles you are comparing could go either way accuracy wise and both scopes are decent quality. It's your money and your investment.

    From what I am told yes... the LRP rifles are target repeaters.
