Wondering if you guys (and gals) can help me out here.

My Dad and I are looking to meet up somewhere for a vacation (he lives in AZ, I live in MI). He was thinking something like Hawaii or Central America, which sounds great. But those kind of trips get boring to me. Just sitting on the beach reading, going for a hike or two, swimming in the ocean, etc just don’t do it for me.

So I floated the idea of doing a “gun camp” and he likes the idea. But I don’t even know where to start. I did a google search and there are about a million of them out there. I’m hoping some of you have some insight into which ones are good, which are a waste of time, etc. And it would be a bonus to find one located near something else so we could get two vacations in one in.

I would like to do a school that revolved around precision rifle. I don’t have an aversion to doing some pistol stuff, but I do shoot USPSA so it would have to be some pretty exciting pistol schooling to make it worth the money. A carbine course would be pretty cool though.

I get plenty of time putting rounds down range, but it’s almost always at ranges where you can’t “run and gun”. As stupid as it sounds I would like to do something that leans more toward the “Tack-Ti-Cool” side of things, “dynamic shooting” or whatever the buzz word is for it.

We would have no problem doing a 4-5 day course. Or maybe a 2-3 day precision rifle course and a 2 day carbine course or something along those lines.

As far as location goes something just outside of Las Vegas sounds like a winner. But that is the least important part of the equation. I would rather not be in the middle of nowhere or down town Atlanta either though.

Any suggestions?

Thanks a lot!

Re: Rifle School Suggestions

Rifles Only is in Kingsville, TX.
They have a PR5-day which is excellent.

Gunsite is not far from Prescott, AZ.
They have a PR7-day which is excellent.

Re: Rifle School Suggestions

Havent been to Rifles Only but Im sure that being loosely affiliated with SH its excellent. You might want to look into [email protected] . I took the Barrett Armours course with Jon Weiler the owner. He does a lot of his trainings at The NRA Whittington Center, ( www.nrawc.org )in Raton New /Mexico. Not only do they have a 64,000 acre place with one of, if not the, most comphehensive shooting layouts in the world. You can do hunts, and Jon also has 24 hour endurance courses. Be ready though, Raton is at 8800 ft altitude, enough to make you breathe hard if your not ready. They also have cabins and bunk houses you can rent VERY reasonably. I had a great time...if Texas is too hot you might want to try them. Good luck, have fun.

Anyone have any input on these guys?

Right now I’m looking at the:

Gunsite Precision Rifle 7

Storm Mountain (not sure what course)

Rifles Only Precision Rifle I and Precision Rifle II combo

Re: Rifle School Suggestions

Rifles only is looking like a winner right now. I talked to them on the phone and what they have and their schedule looks pretty good. We will probably be doing the Combat Carbine & Handgun course for three days and then the Precision Rifle I for three days during the 1st week of October.

Now all I have to do is figure out how to ship two rifles, two carbines and two to three pistols and all my gear down. What a PITA! LOL!

Re: Rifle School Suggestions

I second Rifles Only. I have only taken the train-up to the Bushnell Brawl this past April not a normal class however the instruction was very clear and concise! Jacob has a way of explaining things so that you better understand even the things you already know! Quite amazing! I plan on taking some of his actual courses in the future!

Re: Rifle School Suggestions

Central Cascade Precision. You will be near some beautiful country, and EVERY review of this course says it is one of the best. Look up some of the reviews about this course, and it's instructors before you decide. Some of the larger shooting magazines have done reviews on it, and say it is great. Rifleshooter, Rifle, Shooting Times, and so on. Do some research, and I think you will really consider it.

And I have no connection with this course at all, financial or otherwise. I would like to attend, but haven't yet.

Re: Rifle School Suggestions

Two-three large Pelican 1750s will hold all that right?

Take them on the plane.

Buy certain stuff AT RO - instead of lugging it all.

Re: Rifle School Suggestions

What about Front Sight in Nevada? I was wondering if this is a legitimate company or a joke...they seem to sell "memberships" at ridiculously low prices. Does anyone have any experience with them?

Re: Rifle School Suggestions

Well it looks like I have the groundwork for a plan set up.

My Dad and I are going to do the Rifles Only Combat Carbine and Handgun (3 day) Oct. 1-3. They offer a Precision Rifle I (3 day) Oct 4-6, but I think 6 days straight with two completely different rifles, gear, ammo, etc is potentially a logistical nightmare. And a butload of work. I will need a vacation when I get back from “vacation”!

My Dad and I are going to do the Combat Carbine and Handgun (3 day) and then spend a few days after in Corpus Christi relaxing in some nice digs, eating good food, having a few “cocktails” and maybe if where lucky there will be a good “Ballet Club” in town.

In the meantime they have a “special event” Michigan Precision Rifle course (3 day) up here in Michigan Aug 19-21 I’m going to do with a friend of mine, maybe. I’ll know Monday.

I’m going to go back down in the spring and do the Precision Rifle I and II combo (5 day). Or Precision Rifle II. It will be schedule dependent.

I would rather have done a Precision Rifle deal from the start because I have done the Carbine/Pistol of thing before (different trainer). But my Dad hasn’t and that’s what he wants to do. And its not like its going to break my heart, I’m sure its going to be a riot.

I may have to start looking into a bolt gun for the Precision Rifle I and II courses though. I’m not sure my .308 POF is going to cut it out at 1000m. The problem is my shoulder is pretty mashed up from some pretty big motorcycle roadracing crashes. It doesn’t like bolt guns a whole lot. The gas gun is PLENTY rough. I guess I’ll have to cross that bridge when I get to it.

I appreciate everyone’s help and advice. Now it’s time to start planning on what gear I’m going to take/have to buy. WoooooHooooo!

Thanks a lot for your input!
