rifle stocks.. trued 700 build....

Im going to do a few trued rem 700 builds and dont want to drop the $$$ on a manners if its not a custom action...

What do yall think of the HS Precision vertical grip stocks? Ive never owned one... just felt them a few times on factory rifles at the gun shop... the feel pretty solid... ive never taken one apart and examined the quality though...

for the price HS stocks are around about how much i want to spend... no more than $450-500...


What else should i look into before i buy? Not quite up to date on what available now... i still havent been convinced about chassis stocks... too tacticool for me... gonna be 300 win mag build and a 284 win build

The choate looks good. The BC too. My buddy is going to order a Boyds tacticool as well. Never handled any of these stocks. Just throwing out options.

I dont know much about choate.... i dont like bell and carlson quality... only boyds ive handled are laminate wood they are decent wood stocks.

You can get a Bell & Carlson for just over $200. Either of the B&C or HS Precision's with the aluminum bedding block should still be bedded. They make an adequate working stock.

Having bedded a couple of the laminated wood factory Remington stocks I know they are perfectly adequate also, just not as 'sexy' as a fiberglass stock. They're a little heavier but I believe have a little more 'warmth' when held. Some of the 1000 yd BR shooters prefer large laminated stocks believing they dampen vibrations better. Boyds' now has their Tacticool available in all their laminate varieties.

Don't know why a trued 700 wouldn't rate a good stock. I've had a couple of non-trued 700s that could run down to around half-MOA with a good handload. Get what fits you best, it will have a significant difference on your shooting ability.

FWIW, I've had one B&C. The quality control or lack thereof cured me from ever wanting to buy another. I've owned three H-S stocks. This last one had a piece the size of my thumbnail flake off before I ever put a round through it. My last official H-S purchase. Owned a half dozen McMillans and one Manners and will definitely buy more. In addition to a better made product, they just fit me better.

I bought a b&c once and I won't do it again. It took serious dremel work to get the trigger to fit, the rear tang to fit and various other spots. Then it needed bedding. The HS I bought had minor fitment issues with the bottom metal but that wasn't much. The HS was a better purchase.

Now, I have a manners eh1 and its not even in the same league. Sure, it is double the price and requires work but it is gorgeous, fits me perfect and the stock feel is beyond what the affordable stocks will ever be able to do.

Just keep an eye on the for sale section and you can pretty much buy a good manners or mcmillan for just over what a new hs will be.

My new .308 build is gonna be on a trued 700 and its getting the full treatment
I wouldn't hesitate one second to put a trued 700 build in a custom stock. Go with a Manners, you really will thank yourself once its in your hands.

My new trued 700 308 build is going in a McMillan I got at a killer deal and it will be right at home in that McMillan

Cant go wrong with tried and true mcmillan. Whatever you do make sure you get them with adjustable cheekpieces, but not the saddle type (too thick/ forces your face to the side)

I totally agree... i have two manners stocks and love them... but at $1000 each they just hurt to buy for everything lol..

I wouldn't own a hs precision and I surely wouldn't buy one. The B&C gives you better performance, half the price, and the exact same price on the used market. HS Precision has never cared about anything but money, preferably government money. Support those that support us, I say.

I just picked up a McMillan A5 for my 308 5r. It was basically new and I gave $650 for it. I assume by this conversation that I did alright? I run across stuff like this once in a while. I'd be happy to pass these kinds of things along to you guys when I find them if it's worth doing or if anybody is interested.
