Gentlemen,

I hope everyone had a great Christmas/Hanakuh/Festivus! I was wondering if you guys had any recommendations for long range rifle shooting classes. I have been into the sport for a couple of years now and am basically self taught and if I don't say so myself I have done pretty well. However, there is an opportunity to improve my consistency and overall performance. I would love the opportunity to travel to a training class to learn from a well qualified instructor. I live in Indiana and closer would be better, but I don't mind jumping on a plane if need be. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and recommendations.

Several good schools to choose from. I have personal experience with Caylen Wojcik with Magpul Dynamics. See if he has a class close by. Caylen has a "been there, done that" pedigree and can effectively teach what he knows...

I can add recommendation for Sean Little at Vapor Trail Tactical (also "been there one that"), and for Jamie Dodson at Wolf Precision. Trained with both, have nothing but great appreciation and high praise for the skills taught and knowledge received.

There are other good schools here on the 'Hide - i just haven't had a chance to learn there (yet, hopefully!

Rifles only. Jacob Bynum and his crew put on a great training. I took their precision rifle 1&2 class, and I have greatly improved my skill set all the way around. I look forward to training more with them, and will be doing so before the Bushnell Brawl.

Re: Rifle Training Classes - Recommendation?

I offer an advanced military rifle course, (Google M4 Marksmen). This course is ideal for anyone aspiring to do better with the long range rifle. I typically make this offering twice a week just outside of Louisville at the Knob Creek Gun Range. I am a NRA High Master Long Range Competitor, the course covers all knowledge important to reach that plateau.

Re: Rifle Training Classes - Recommendation?

There are lots of good courses out there. In my experience, the quality of the students will make or break a course. That said, you can't control who shows up - except by spending a reasonable amount of money to travel to a known quantity school. Whether it is worth the trip depends also on the facilities available when you get there. That will also help narrow your choices. Above all, the quality of your education will depend on the quality of the instructor - whether or not you are already an experienced shooter.

Bill and his guys at Blackwater used to run a very good intro sniper/advanced sniper at NC, but things have changed there and I no longer have first-hand experience of that course. When I was there SSG G dropped-by for a week, which made for some excellent discussions and real-world insight into tactics and fieldcraft. It's a nice facility, too, so it might be worth a look to see who's teaching there now.

Caylen is a very good instructor and he knows his stuff. I haven't taken his course, but I know him and have shot with him, and I wouldn't hesitate to travel anywehere just to take his high-angle course. Caylen has probably forgotton more than I know about practical riflery. He's not only a genuine war hero, but also very humble, approachable and personable.

Jacob is a very good instructor and he knows his stuff. Rifles Only is a superb facility and it attracts top-tier personalities from around the world. Jacob is truly a master of the craft, and he has a charisma and enthusiasm not found in other instructors. I learn something about shooting every time I talk to Jacob, and I always feel privileged just to be in the company of the people I meet and shoot with at Rifles Only. If you've never been there you are missing an essential experience in one's personal development.

Not yet mentioned here is Cory Trapp; he's also a very good instructor and he knows his stuff. Gunsite fell from grace for a while many years ago, but Buzz has made it again a premier facility staffed with excellent instructors. If you want to sweat the details of the ELR game, Cory's knowledge of the technical stuff like FFS and passive ranging and triangulation in unmatched. Also, if you want to get your face dirty with a week-long PR7 course, Gunsite is the place.

I would suggest that you call them all up, speak to a human being, and let that experience guide you as to which one to choose first.

Step on the yellow footprints....

sorry I couldn't resist

When I was getting back into it I just found some guys and they helped train me up from what the MC didn't teach me. I was astonished at how much I had to learn beyond putting tiny holes in paper!
