So I've been playing around with some pretty small targets with a fellow Hider until our LR facility opens up next month. It got me thinking that a 22 could be a hoot of a lot of fun in addition to shooting 1,000 yards + with my 6.5. I've seen the KYL targets that looks way too much fun. What other kinds of matches do you guys participate in? How accurately can you shoot a 22 with factory ammo at say 200? 300?

    Thanks guys!

Our local competition shoots 6 events each year from 50-500 yards. The majority of the targets are 100-300 but there’s always one stage between 400-500. It’s amazing how many people get on target quick.

I got into .22LR competition this year as a way to learn the sport and eventually “graduate” into centerfire PRS matches....... I’m unsure what the future holds but I don’t foresee “outgrowing” .22 competitions for several years

I shoot most anything from nrl22 matches that are <=100yds to .22prs matches out to 300+ yds.

I have a vudoo and with ammo that costs $0.10rnd (sk standard plus) I can hit 6” plates regularly at 300yds (wind cooperating).

I prefer better/more expensive ammo like center x or Midas plus at distances over 175/200. But the sk will work if the targets are the proper size.

I think matches that stretch out to 200 or so are pretty reasonable. My dope at 1k with my dasher is roughly the same as my .22 at 225yds. So, anything further than 250/275 is bumping into ELR territory (though it’s definitely doable).

There aren't any NRL22 matches in my area, but I do shoot a few local matches each month.

One is called Extreme Silhouette. The match is shot from a bench with silhouettes at the following ranges:

    Chickens - 80 yards
    Pigs - 120 yards
    Turkeys - 154 yards
    Rams - 200 yards

Its quite a bit of fun and the wind can create some challenges at the longer ranges getting the silhouettes to fall and not just spin or rock back and forth.

Another local club shoots a different version of silhouette called modified silhouette. In this match, the chickens and turkeys are shot from a bench at 82 yards and 100 yards respectively. The rams and pigs are shot at 50 yards and 40 yards, offhand.

The offhand portion is tougher than you would think. Once the modified silhouette portion is over, we switch to a longer range match, which is almost identical to the Extreme Silhouette match I mentioned earlier that the other club shoots.

Edited to add that I'm pushing hard to get a handgun stage or two added to these matches as well...

I just ran a small .22 LR PRs style match on Sunday. We had paper targets prone at 50 and 219 yards and steel targets from 100-315 yards. Targets at 315 were 20” square, 2/3 ipsc and 12” round.

At 219 I had 8” bull paper target, 12” diamond for barricade style and off the roof shooting and full shaving cream cans on strings.

At 100, there was 3” and 4” steel for barricade and roof work and a kyl rack with 5 targets from 5”-1” for off the tower rails, left and right handed. There was 50 yard paper targets that varied from a 1-1/4” bull to a 1-1/4”-1/4” kyl stage, to 3/4” pumpkins. You had 45 seconds to pick out your color pumpkins on the target and hit as many of the ten as you could. One guy with a CZ cleaned that stage.

Typical holds for 315 yards were about 16-17 mils. It’s great fun and seems to be gaining in popularity.

I for short range, I like KYL, match sticks, splitting playing cards at 50 yds. gum ball glued to golf tees at 100 yds. I have 1" to 12" gongs for longer ranges. All I have 150 yds to 200 yds locally, but now have a range that has 600ys now. You can do well out to 200yds, but longer the wind can work you over.
