Rifle Scopes Rimfire Scope Help

Hey guys. I'm looking at getting an RPR rimfire to get my son (9) into shooting. He has shot my 223s many times but even those the sound and recoil bother him. I'm thinking the RPR rimfire so that we can both shoot it and it's fairly cheap and accurate out of the box.

Usage will be groups and steel out to 100 yards. Possibly 200 but that would be the exception not the rule.

I've done some searching but am not finding good luck with my criteria:
Not too expensive trying to keep the whole project under $1000
Tactical style turrets
Mils

Again the primary purpose of this project is to set him up for success later on bigger rifles with scopes with turrets and mils.

Vortex diamondback tactical. 6-24, mil/mil, FFP, ebr2c reticle, under $375 to your door if you look around and lifetime warranty. That and it’ll do on a centerfire when that time comes.

I'm with Doug on this. The Athlon Talos BTR 4-14 is what I have on my RPRR, and it's perfect for what you intend w/o spending much at all. Glass is acceptable for the ranges you'll shoot with a .22LR, and the turrets are accurate for dialing in the necessary changes for various distances. It's a great inexpensive training combination.

Six inch steel looks big as a house @ 100yds.
I usually shoot the bolt heads that hang it at that range.

The Athlon’s are fantastic scopes. Just pick your budget and buy one. My son is 10 and competes with me in NRL22 matches and PRS matches. Both of his rifles wear a 6-24 Athlon Midas TAC. Absolutely fantastic scopes and relatively light which was one of the big requirements for me. Great glass and great 10 mil turrets. Give Doug a call and he will take care of you.

Not necessarily. I'd shoot it a bunch first to see before spending the money.

I'm a wobbly old man with a RPRR, and I make cold bore hits on 6" steel @ 250yds shooting in the sitting position, unsupported rear with a tall Harris bipod, Athlon Talos BTR, and CCI SV. So they aren't all automatically in need of an aftermarket barrel right off the bat.

I know there are better accuracy options. But what attracted me to the rprr is that it's out of the box at a good price point with a modular "chassis".

My sons RPR rimfire shoots better than my friends CZ. That of course depends a lot on ammo though. The big advantage of the RPR is the adjustability of the stock. My son is to short to use my full size rifle but we can shorten the length of pull on the Ruger to fit him perfectly. As he grows we can just adjust the stock to fit him. I have heard a lot of people knock the RPR but for the money it is pretty hard to beat. Mine and the two my friends own are also pretty darn accurate when you find an ammo it likes. Now you can’t throw just any ammo in it but all the 22’s I have shot in the same price range are the same way.

Not to hijack this thread, but I am also about to pick up a new scopes for my old Marlin Glenfield and my son's Savage .22 bolt. Both came with little scopes on them, but they aren't much. I'm not looking to drop a lot of money, just want to upgrade hunting ability. That said, is there any advantage to going with a "rimfire" rifle scope as opposed to just sticking a regular scope on it? I se both Vortex and Nikon (and probably other companies) have scopes designated for rimfire rifles. Are these just lightly built scopes, or are they specifically designed for the rimfire cartridge?

"Rimfire" scopes have a shorter fixed parallax distance, usually 50 yards, but sometimes 60 or 75 yards.

If you decide to pick a medium-power scope with side focus or adjustable objective, try to pick one that can focus down to a short distance. Some focus 50 yards to infinity, but others focus 10 or 25 yards to infinity.

Here's a list of 35 scopes under $500 that are suitable for rimfire (fixed parallax under 100 yards or adjustable parallax down to 20 yards or less, less than 6X low end magnification). There's a whole bunch more than this, it's just the list I've compiled so far. Work in progress.

Good catch. My code searched for "rimfire" in product or reticle names, but I didn't think to also search for "22LR". They'll be in the next update (probably along with a pile of other scopes I haven't added yet).

$25 to crack open a scope, change parallax and reticle, then purge/reseal? That's an amazing value!

I should clarify that they didn't change the reticle. I sent in the scope with the Accu-Range reticle and they changed the parallax for $25. It was overall still less expensive that a comparable Leupold Rimfire scope at the time.

Great thread, my son (9) and I just started going together the range! He really loves it. Has a Ruger 10/22 takedown with a weaver scope. Glass is actually pretty nice, but I know upgrading him to a Vortex HST or an Athlon is the way I’m going to go.

Reading how you guys like the RPR, and I know I love my RPR in 6.5, it might be the next upgrade as well. Subscribing to this thread... always good times at the range with the kids!

I’ve used weaver for the most part for my 22lr setups.

I have a a VXII 3x9 on a Winchester 52 I shoot primarily at 100 and 200 yards and a Weaver 3x9 I shoot at varying distances out to 200 yards. Both are suitable for this purpose, though the Leupold mildly edges out the Weaver when it comes to a thinner cross hair and better clarity.

I built out an RPRR for my nephew with rifle, Athlon Argos BTR 6-24 scope, rings, M-lok swivel, and Harris S-BRM bipod (rings and bipod used but like-new from LGS) for a fraction over $900. I too would shoot the bolt heads as it helps me focus. Aim small, Hit small. Try shooting aspirin. They are a lot of fun because they are dynamic like miniature skeet. We crazy glued the aspirin to vertical wires about 6" long and shot them with our pellet rifles at 50 yards. The pellet guns are FWB, Styer , Daystate etc. I was using a Leupold 6.5 x 20 x 40 EFR at the time that I took first place in Unlimited B class at the Worlds Field Target comp in 93. To place now you need more like a 50 power. IE: Sightron 10 x 50 x 60 at about 1300.00 USD. The blue gun is my FWB P-70 high power. You fill the lower tube with 3000 psi. air from my scuba tanks.

If aspirin are too small at 100 yards, any cheap candy like sweet tarts would work as well. They are closer to 5/8". I have never shot paper worth a cr#p because I just don't focus enough. I'm using an Athlon Helos BTR 8x34x56 IR on four guns. My trigger is 1 pound, 1 oz. on my RPR rim fire and my Ruger 8348 American. I pulled the trigger tension spring and lapped off the trigger sear with 1 micron lapping film with PSA backing. That is like 14,000 wet dry. There appears to be about 1mm of sear engagement which is more than I would like. Since the trigger has the accu-trigger like safety, I think I can reduce that with a build up of epoxy or low temp solder.

LOL..... Those are the soft blue covered handles on my Channellock Slip joint Pliers. I do my best to protect my guns and keep them as close to LNIB as possible. I don't like to hide them in silicon socks, but I do. I would prefer to see my toy's. I pull the actions and WAX the metal and wood. Scroll down to about April 3. One of my first posts on the forum.
The photos of the 45-70 Sharps are from the guy I bought the rifle from, it looks the same to this day. I am new to the forum but not new to guns. I just got this rail for my CZ 457 MTR.... Is it worth 105.00 .... NO..... but I'm only going to buy it once and my stuff will be handed down to my niece. I failed to mention that I use MOS2 grease on my triggers and other sliding surfaces. It has a very low coefficient of friction.

Nice guns! You must have a short neck - got that scope mounted way back on your RPRR.

I used a Athlon Argos BTR 6-24x50 on my MAC1 USFT the last 3 years in our local Field Target air rifle matches. Got me 1 state win then 1st in freestyle division the last two years. Darn good scopes for the money!

Because I have it, I use a S&B 5-25 on my Anschutz 1827F, since I use it more often, or I should say did use it more often, because our local NRL22 match has been cancelled the last three months, which sucks!!!

OMG.... Finally a FT guy...LOL ! All of the work done on the FWB was done by AZ. Sadly the closest FT venue is six hours away at Roz Sumpters place. As far as short neck.. I very well may have. I have had two surgeries at C5,C6C7. One front and one back. I'm in Paris Tn. so getting air is a 90 minute venture one way. That is why I just got these powder. Yes, for the money, they are nice scopes. I much prefer my Leupold glass quality. It is clear edge to edge. If I started buying a bunch of airguns at this point they would go to my niece and sit under the bed. they don't understand them and could not even pay someone to service them. Paris is a 25K town. I have an insert .22 LR for this 45-70, that is what I shoot most of the time. I have had plenty of people look down on me when I say " pellet gun " I try and convey the idea of "Shooting Enjoyment" but I'm certain they don't get it. They need to shoot manly caliber a these small southern deer. IE: 300 Win Mag. But hell... I don't get that.
