I just got in a Leupold mark 4 ert to put on my rem. 700 sps tactical .308 and I want to do it right but the Leupold mark 4 30mm rings and the 2 peice base for the rifle and scope are three to four times the price of regular rings and bases. Are the mark 4 rings and bases that much better than the regular Leupold rings and bases? The cheapest I've found the rings is $125.00. Is it worth the extra money in the long run or not. I apologize if this is a repost. Thanks for the help.

Re: Ring and base money ???

First of all, you want a 1 piece base, no doubt about that. Second of all, there are other rings that are good for the money. I know Seekins is top notch and the rings and base are each $100. Theres that and then there are budget brands such as TPS rings and EGW base. I have TPS and they have served me well but they are definitely not Seekins quality but are around $60-$70. EGW base is i think around $40 but again, not as good as top brand bases but will serve you well.

Re: Ring and base money ???

I'll just second some of MacBud's comments. You do NOT want 2pc bases...spend the money and get a 1pc base. I have used the TPS Steel bases and rings in the past and while they aren't Badger Ord quality, they are a nice, lower-cost alternative. Check with SWFA (a site sponsor here) about what they can offer you. You should be able to get a steel TPS XP Tactical base (0MOA or 20MOA cant) for around $60 and steel TPS TSR 30mm rings for $65 or so bringing your total cost for rings and base to approx. what you'd pay just for the Leupold Mk4 rings alone.

Re: Ring and base money ???

Why is everybody against the 2pc base sets? I understand that they are more "tactical" having all that rail to be seen but is there that much more rigidity added by the 1pc rail? Since most people clammer about the base being bedded to relieve the stress of the action not being true, seems to me that a set of 2pc bases and a good set of lapped in rings would be suffecient.

Oh yeah...with the 2pc set you couldn't use the feeler guage scope mounting method I guess.

Just trying to start a pissing match!!

But seriously I am unsure why all above posters confirmed that a 2pc base set would be a waste. I myself was considering a 2pc set to save weight but alas they don't go any more cant than 20MOA so no go for my build.

Re: Ring and base money ???

I think the reasons for having a 1 piece base just outweigh the reasons for having a 2 piece.

Pros of a 1 Piece Base:
- Solid
- Allows add ons such as angle indicators without requiring the rings to be moved
- 40MOA bases available
- Single piece is self aligned
- Allows for guages to be inserted to properly level scope
- Generaly more room to move rings around
