CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - At least one person drowned after an attempted robbery from a clothing store on Friday afternoon, authorities said.
The robbery was reported before 4 pm at a Burlington Coat Factory Clothing store and involved 3 suspects, police said.
When heavy rains that dumped 6 inches in Charlotte hit the area, two of the suspects from the robbery escaped into waters near the store, police said.
Crews were first called out to Independence Blvd. and North Sardis Road around 4 pm and one person was later rescued and refused treatment.
One person was recovered from the creek and pronounced dead around 5:25 pm, police said. A second person linked to the robbery is still missing, and is believed to have also drowned, police said.
A person with loss prevention at the Burlington Coat Factory attempted to rescue one of the suspects from the creek but was unsuccessful, police said.
No names have been released by police.
