Gunsmithing Rockset has me tearing hair out. VISE Suggestions?

I need to remove a saker brake from a new (to me) proof sendero. Original owner tells me it was rocksetted in place. Have tried a warm water soak, hammer smacks, jumping on one foot etc but cant get the threadlok to let go.

I have a vblock for my vice that holds the barrel to about 50ft lbs before slipping.

Thimk i am going to have to buy a proper vice. Any suggestions on a good choice? Im keenly anxious to avoid damaging the carbon barrel.

Searching around people suggest boiling water.

I left it in the stock and didn’t use a vice on mine. Boiling water helps and soaking it for hours helps, oil the bore and let it sit for a day worst comes to worst. I let mine sit for 8 hours the first time. I use much less rocksett now.

It was probably way over tightened as well. Contrary to the name, Rocksett itself isn't that strong, it's just very heat resistant. Water soak seems to help but you're likely going to need better holding/wrenching capability. Or you might have to cut the brake.

Boiling water helped me remove a couple of gas block set screws that some schmoe tried to make permanent. Prop your upper so that your muzzle device sits in a pot of boiling water for an hour or so. Maybe less.

I agree with @spife7980, I use just the tiniest bit of the stuff on the few occasions I put it on something, which isn't much.

Boiling water will work.

Just be patient, I let my muzzle sit in boiling water for 30 minutes and my break spun right off with hand tools and No need for a vice.

I unfortunately used a lot of Rockset.

thanks. The PO clearly overdid it with the rocksett. I have soaked and boiled without result. Techniques have all failed. i am afraid i will have to use a vice. Anyone have any recommendations for something that won't chew up the carbon commercially available? anyone aware of a bushing set for commercial barrel vises?

Well, you kinda have to use a barrel vice anyway, even with all these tips. I wouldn't exactly say you're doomed.

I had to let mine sit in water 24 hours one time to get it off

I don't believe clamping on the Carbon is a very good idea!

I use heat. I don't think it will damage the carbon at the rate that I have used in the past. Spins right off. You can also utilize the heat sink paste on the barrel if you are concerned.

Rocksett claims to hold to 2,015°, you heat your barrel up that much to get the ceramic cement to let go?

I think what OP is missing here is that he DOES need some kind of a barrel vice. Not necessarily a bolt-it-to-the-bench 200 ft lb one, but at least some barrel vice jaws. I posted a link above to the kind I'm talking about. I think when many of say "Yeah, the dang thing practically fell off in my hand!" we ARE actually talking about having the barrel in a vice and getting the muzzle device off with very little effort after that.

At least that's true for me. I've gotten them off "very easily" but I did have the upper clamped in some vice jaws. After boiling the end for an hour and using a decent wrench, the thing really did come right off.

close....i know i need a vice, but i am concerned about clamping the OD of the carbon barrel and tearing it up. Was hoping to find some recommendations around specific vises or jaws that had worked for folks in a similar scenario.

and i can't fathom heating a barrel enough to brake the rockset...seems like that would destroy the heat treat on the barrel.

Link above should help. If you prefer barrel vice jaws that don't have the rubber coating a few sheets of printer paper do an amazing job of gripping and being non-marring.
