I just got back from the range and a guy there was shooting a 458 socom. After talking to him and learning this is a legal round to deer hunt in Indiana with I have deffinately got to get me one of these. Would love to see some pics of set ups and the group sizes guys are getting.
Also what kind of accuracy can be expected at various ranges?
Thanks all,
Dantrom

Re: RRA 458 Socom

My cousin has one and he loads his own ammo which is a must to help keep costs down. As for the accuracy he is shooting pretty tight groups at 100-200 yards and says after 200 it has such massive drop its a waste to use it.

Re: RRA 458 Socom

the 458 Socom, 450 Bushmaster, and 50 Beowulf are all good for at least 200yds and accuracy is outstanding--I love these bigbores for hog hunting--an AR15 in a big-bore with an Eotech is
my favorite for moving targets--large variety of bullets for reloading also

Re: RRA 458 Socom

Read a little on this awhile ago and what I found id that the.450 bushmaster seems to have the better ammo availability and is cheaper. The .450 socom has better ballistics and both need special magazines to function right. thats about all I know on this subject. Worth looking into tho.

Re: RRA 458 Socom

458 SOCOM just uses regular Pmags to function. A buddy of mine uses them without any trouble. The 450 Bushy needs a special follower and some ears in a magazine, to my knowledge the only place to get them is from Bushmaster, to the tune of about $38/each with shipping.

The 20" upper that STRICK9's got will shoot right about MOA to 200yd with the Corbon ammo he was running. I've been loading him some stuff lately but he doesn't shoot it much.

The 458 brass is limited to 35ksi and uses Large Pistol primers because it's formed from untrimmed 50 AE brass. The 450 Bushy has the potential to be a much harder hitter when loaded to capacity as it's formed from cutting a 284 case off at the shoulder and shoving a 458 bullet in there, the brass can handle 50ksi+.

I've done some extensive work with big bore rounds in AR's using 30-06 brass and 44cal bullets. They're awesome for hunting rounds. My personal choice is the case the my dad and I did on the 30-06 parent because we did it before the 450 or 458 and it uses really easy to acquire brass as the parent case. For a turnkey factory package I'd probably choose a 458 SOCOM over the 450 Bushy because of the non-proprietary magazines. What really excites me about these cases is shooting super heavy bullets at subsonic speeds through suppressors for hunting quietly. You don't need 50ksi brass to handle that.

Re: RRA 458 Socom

458 Socom is what I have.

I chose it for several reasons:

Unmodified factory magazines.

458 diameter bullets vs 452(?) for the Bushy. The Socom diameter bullet is much more common for rifle bullets and such, the Bushy's diameter is more common to pistol rounds (selection is improving supposedly)

There are several small manufactures of Socom ammo, to my knowledge only Hornady loads for the Bushy as of now. I reload for the all the obvious reasons.

In my reading, the Socom had better performance and has a MUCH better selection of bullets. Anywhere from 100 (Leheigh) grain AL bullets to 550+ grn VLD bullets. The Socom with a suppressor shooting sub sonic 500+ grain bullets delivers 1000+ ft/lbs of energy well past 100 yds. That is alot of energy for a subsonic round out of an AR15 platform!

None of the rounds mentioned are extended range rounds for average shooters. They all have 'rainbow' trajectories. They are all best suited for 150 yds and less, maybe 200 in good hands. Of course, a very well trained shooter could accomplish more...as always.

The SOCOM is BAD MEDICINE on pigs and deer...I mean BAD MEDICINE!!!

Re: RRA 458 Socom

notice the rather large holes in the target? that is 300 yds with a 325 grain hornady 458 diameter bullet launched with a healthy dose of reloader 7 and cci 300 primers out of my 16 inch rra upper . and yes I know trigger control means everything, being distracted and jerking the trigger causes the emberrassing flyer on the bottom

Re: RRA 458 Socom

This is the 458 Socom home page. The man who created it, this is his web site:

Here is a link to another forum that has a very informative, with pics, thread on what the Socom is capable of:

http://www.quarterbore.net/forums/showthread.php?s=6c464862f8ce59655213469403606455&t=2888

There are several threads on the Socom on that forum.

Assuming a 100 yd zero and a muzzle velocity of about 1800 fps, at 300 yds the Socom has about a 45" drop and just over 1000 ft/lbs of energy with a 325 grn bullet.

I was using a weaver 3x10x40 tactical at 300 yds I had to come up 3.2 mils from a 100 yd zero. but to be honest most of the time my rifle wears a leupold 2x7x33 because a shot of over 200 yds would be a freak of nature with 99% of most shots at deer less than 100 yds where I hunt
