Hello all, this is my first post and I do hope I am putting it in the right section. I have had several pistols and rifles over the years for just short range plinking. I am now interested in learning about shooting at longer ranges. The gun I am interested in is an RRA LAR 8. Barrel length is what I'm confused about. I am thinking that I want a 20-inch barrel because I have read somewhere that .308 powder is all burned by 18 to 20 inches. Is this true??? The 26 inch barrel would just be for better accuracy??? Or does it just depend on the ammo being used??? Thanks in advance and I hope this is posted in the correct place. Please have patience with me. I am just trying to learn. I tried to search but could find what I am asking about.

Re: RRA LAR 8 varmit. 20 or 26 inch barrel ??

I would really like to get a 20" model, just for the portability aspect. Some day I'm going to order the upper. I currently have the 16" Mid-length model and the 26" Varmint model.

I'm sure that the 20" will work and be very accurate. I haven't found anyone who has one yet.

Here's what my LAR-8 26" Varmint model can do: (This is 10 shots at 100 yards, using my 180 gr Nosler reloads. I was using a bipod and rear sandbag)

Thanks for the reply. Thats a nice looking group. Some day maybe I will be able to achevieve that. What kind of grouping do you get with your 16 inch upper ???

I haven't done extensive testing with the 16", like I have with the 26", but I have gotten sub MOA groups with it. Usually around 3/4". I use it mainly for 3-gun type shooting and not precision shooting.

The longer tube will give you higher velocity which translates into less wind-drift at long distances which (we all hope) translates into better accuracy at those longer distances.

If you know you're going past 600yds, no reason not to get the long tube.

I have the RRA 223 Varminter with a 24" barrel and went through the same decision process. I decided it would cost less to cut the long barrel if I did'nt like it than it would to buy a longer one later. It is still a 24" and has been a very good rifle and lots of fun.
