While I wait for my Q Thunderchicken to arrive, I figure I could start getting my 16" RRA Operator 2 ready to run suppressed. I believe (hope) it has a mid-length gas system.

Will the JP adjustable gas block be optimal by itself? Should I consider an upgraded spring, heavier buffer (such as PWS H3 or H4), or bootleg adjustable carrier in addition to the JP adjustable? Thanks.

In my (limited) experience with (other people’s) Rock River guns, they are ridiculously overgassed.
Even shooting steel cased .223 unsuppressed they exhibit signs of overgassing.

Start with an adjustable gas block. You’re probably going to need everything you listed.

If I were doing it, I would just rebarrel it with a properly ported barrel, like a Daniel Defense 16” mid length gas system barrel.

Probably be cheaper and simpler than buying and applying bunch of Band-Aid solutions to the sewer pipe gas port that RRA puts on all of their guns.

I have a RRA O2. I don't think it is that bad - I can throw a ball farther than the brass flies!

The mid-length does run hot. Barrel has fire cracking like no tomorrow and deteriorating around the gas port. I bought 3 extra barrels when RRA was running a sale even though the original barrel keeps running. Having said that, the gas port has zero chance of ever plugging up, and the gas tube still looks great.

Adjustable gas for sure. I know you said you were planning on the JP AGB in your first post, I have one of those and a few of the SLR AGB, IMO the SLR are much nicer. They are all I use now. H2 or H3 buffer definitely won't hurt, but just start with the gas block and go from there.

I have an RRA Varmint upper that runs like a champ with just an adjustable gas block. 18" mid-length gas system, and I was able to tune it down to where it wouldn't lock open on an empty mag... then opened it up one click at a time until it would. Opened it one more click past that to compensate for weak ammo/a dirty gun, etc... and called it a day.

Well, now I’m kinda thinking about getting the bootleg adjustable carrier ($175) instead of the AGB ($100-$140).
I watched a few videos on it (see sage dynamics on YouTube) and read a little bit, and it seems like it’s easier to adjust on the fly and I can put it into another AR if the situation calls for it. Thoughts?

Ok, well I wanted to give it a try so I jumped on the Bootleg Adjustable BCG. I'll try to make a post to update on how it works.

In addition, as far as springs and buffers go, should I consider moving to a springco blue and maybe heavier buffer? I feel like that would give you a "micro" and "macro" adjustment to get the rifle running as smooth as possible between suppressed and unsuppressed...

I have Rock Rivers in several different calibers, ie. .204, .223, .224 V, 6.8, 6.5 GR., 7.62 x 39, .243, & .308 and all are shot suppressed only. To adjust the gas block I start with GB closed and shoot it til bolt stays open plus one click. Maybe it's just the luck of the dumb, but I haven't had any problems tearing up brass or throwing it too far. The only thing I have encountered is dirty brass/bolt/ bolt carrier, especially on the 7.62 x 39 using PP 123 lead round nose on hogs. I have to clean it every morning after a night shoot or I risk the firing pin gumming up the next time I use it. I haven't been around any other suppressed gas guns other than my SP-10 6.5 which doesn't seem to get as dirty (although I don't shoot it very many times in a row, compared to the 7.62) so I really don't know how dirty other suppressed gas guns run.

Received the Bootleg Adjustable Bolt Carrier Group from Rainier Arms the other day. Threw it in the gun on tuesday, and proceeded to run 75gr PPU Match (20rds), 50gr AE Varmint (30rds), Monarch steel case FMJ (40rds). My rock river must not be too overgassed, because it would not function correctly on the second notch with any ammo. Ran flawlessly on the "U" unsuppressed setting. There was no change in accuracy (although I didn't expect there to be). This RRA 1:9 barrel seems to like anything I run in it with 75gr and 50gr making equal amount of hits at 500 yards on an 8" plate. I'm pretty dang happy compared to getting an AGB because I can switch from unsuppressed to suppressed on the fly. Since I'll only have one can for the next year or so, I'll be moving the suppressor around on my rifles so this set up works for me.
I also took the opportunity to install the SSS forward assist gas vent, and RTV sealed my BCM Gunfighter CH with Permatex Ultra Black. Now, just waiting in purgatory for my Q Thunderchicken. May run grab my Cherry Bomb out of the box and install it when my Rocksett arrives so I'm ready to quick attach and go shoot when the stamp arrives.

Thanks for yalls input! I appreciate it. I'll post a new thread with pics when the suppressor arrives.
