RRS tripod L or regular

All, sorry if this is covered, but I'm looking at a RRS TVC Mk2 24 and am asking for the hide-think on the L vs the regular version. There is about a 7oz difference them. Height wize, the maxes are:

24: 49.4"
24L: 66.4"

Use is for spotting and as a rifle tripod, more hunting and sporting in the sub 500M range.

Should I be looking at the series 3?

Unless you are unusually tall, you are unlikely to need the extra height for those applications. I do think the series 3 is a bit better for shooting due to increased stability. Both series are more than enough for scopes or cameras.

Unless you know exactly the height you need/want, go with the L version. You can take height out bit it’s difficult to add height in.

get a tape measure, make sure at maximum height, the tripod comes to your chin.

otherwise it’ll be too short for spotting.

shooting you can get away with, but not spotting.

I am 5'-10" and have the 24L. I would never go in a different direction because the standard height is perfect if you are on flat ground. Anything other than flat, you will wish you had the L series

I have been eyeballing the TFCT-24L SOAR Series 2 Tripod w/ Anvil-30 Ballhead

Where do you hunt/shoot? I live in Montana and having the extra length for setting up on really steap hills to glass and shoot convinced me to go with the 24L. I’m really happy I did that and haven’t looked back.

FWIW, I am just UNDER 6'1". When you add the ball head, rifle setup, optic height of bore, compensate for my massive head and forehead, where my eyes are, I went with the 34 mk3 (non-L) version. Will be just right *for me*, and I dont share my kit because im selfish.

The 34 weighs 4.25#, max height 58.2" and fold length 20.9", fold Diameter 5.7"
The 24L weighs 3.84#, max height 66", fold length 23.3", fold diameter 4.7"

There is a 15# weight rating between them 24L = 70#, 34=85#

So, no clear leader here because I can't parse the tradeoffs of a couple of inches here or there. I like the weight of the 24L , its got more length capability which posters point out as valuable and is 2.5" longer when folded....

Am i missing some real advantage to the Series 3 vs 2?

This video demonstrated to me the value of the mk3. Being able to put all my heavy ass weight into the tripod without concern was comforting. Skip to 1min and 24 seconds for the part i'm referring to.

I would err on the side of going bigger. These are all relatively big, heavy tripods anyway so get as much support as you can. But you're not really going to go wrong with anything RRS.

Ironically my rrs kit showed up today, day ahead of UPS schedule (whenever the fuck does that happen?).

Through the lens of worrying about maximum height being high enough for a 6'1 dude, I purchased correctly. I actually had to take one leg down by a small percentage to get a solid cheek weld, so I had a bit of play even with the 34. FYSA, this was a 34 w/anvil ballhead.
