Ruger American® Rimfire Long-Range Target

anyone tried one of these, esp as compared to cz 455/57? features look pretty complete-shows little need for after market tinkering. just wondering if anyone has tried one.
I’ve toyed with the idea of one, I just can’t seem to find one in person to look at. I shoot a CZ 457 but have been looking for one to practice with that I don’t really care about running cheaper ammo through this looks like a good solution over some of the others.

yea,i would want to at least see and handle one prior to a buy. had an RPR that was decent but not as accurate as my 64 annie or upgrade 457. if these were close in performance,i could get interested.

I had an RAR LR Target, sold it and upgraded to the CZ 457 varmint chassis 16".

RAR Pros:
Takes 10/22 mags that are readily available and hold 10 rounds flush fit
Like you said, ready out of the box. Not much tinkering needed

Cons:
Not nearly as accurate as the 457
Trigger is "ok" but has a good amount of creep. You can take the spring out to get it pretty light but can't eliminate the mush
Aftermarket support is almost non existent. I think the barrel is pressed in (could be wrong) so barrels are not available
The machine work on the bolt was pretty rough and mine did not cycle very smoothly, although it was very reliable in feeding and extracting

Overall the 457 is a much more capable platform. Wide aftermarket support for stocks, chassis, barrels, scope bases, and triggers. Although the factory 457 trigger is amazing and I have not considered replacing it after tuning. Super smooth action, very accurate with the factory barrel. The only thing I don't like about the 457 is magazine pricing and availability and the fact that the 10 rounders are not flush fit. Overall I am extremely pleased with my 457 and do not regret selling the RAR.

I traded my buddy two seasons back and shot a match in base class while he ran my B14R in Open. I won base that day and took 4th Overall that day. Was one impact off beating a Vudoo user.

For what it costs....its a good gun. I find it to be my favorite of the available Ruger American models. Its just not quite as refined as a CZ.

If there was someone out there making good easy to install aftermarket barrels for the Ruger....I think it would it be a much more popular gun. Its kinda surprising for how long the American has been around now it still doesn't get much support.

I used to be somewhat upset that this is the gun that replaced the 77/22. But lets be honest. Ruger didn't do shit to keep it around. And they too were hit or miss in terms to performance. So the American DID make a couple of changes for the better over the 77/22. But its not as finely made....by design.

So the American hasn't changed Ruger's position in the competition market. Not really. They will always be a shadow of themselves. Making cheap guns. Not standing out unless its pure luck.

It always amazes me how people think about "beating a Vudoo..." Just because someone has a Vudoo doesn't mean they are a top shooter. I know for a fact there are people in the .22lr precision game that beat Vudoo shooters with Ruger 10/22s. It's the Indian not the bow/arrow.

Today we took I shot my buddies RPR, for the money it’s a great rifle, again like other posters not as refined as a CZ, (we had a few small ejection issues) I actually think those will clear up with more use everything is still not smoothed out but I would venture to say if someone needed a budget end 22 that’s out of the box ready it’s not a bad option. I agree with DFOOSKING that Ruger has not done much to bring the American to life as a viable NRL22 offering

This. I have a Vudoo and I suck.
