Ruger American rimfire vs Ruger precision rimfire

I've been trying to decide between the 2. I saw the heavy barrel target rar in Cabelas and liked it. Now I realize the precision is almost the same price and similar features. Adjustable stock might be helpful. In hoping to start shooting some local matches like Appleseed and silhouette. And my suppressor is almost done in ATF jail. How do they compare? Is either more inherently accurate? More adjustable? More modification friendly? I also want to build up some more 10/22s and have in the past so I'm used to those mods. Can you put a chassis type stock on the American later if desired? What about different stocks on the precision?

May have to buy one of each for my son and I lol. Would the RAR be better for offhand shooting in silhouette? Either better in prone? Not really any benchrest comps here, maybe nrl, rimfire challenge, silhouette, NRA prone, rimfire sporter.

Thanks!

As Culpeper said for Appleseed and silhouette you would want the American and probably a lighter barrel if you are shooting offhand. For NRL type matches the chassis gives you a lot more flexibility with the m lol handguard. The 30 MOA rail standard is really nice too. I also don’t know how old you son is but the adjustable length of pull for smaller shooters on the precision rimfire is nice. My son uses a Ruger Precision for NRL22 matches. He is 10 and we were able to adjust the stock to fit him perfectly. It is pretty front heavy for a little guy with the 18” heavy barrel but I just ordered him a lightweight barrel from Whistle Pig which will hopefully help with that.

I have the American target rifle. It hangs with and beats the chassis rugers at local matches and while still being a viable option for general pest control and hunting. Side by side they shoot the same groups, the American is more versatile away from a bench imho.

Yeah, I was leaning precision for versatility, able to change barrels, etc. Maybe I should look at a lighter rar, he's 11 but complains even the pellet rifle is heavy. Is there a smaller size rar for kids or are they similar to 10/22 carbine lop? That was the other reason I was leaning precision. I suppose I shouldn't care about changing barrels as long as stock is good enough lol. Then I open a whole other bags of worms and wonder if I should just go Tikka or CZ. I know the CZ has the scout he could start off on. I was going to enjoy magazine interchangeability with the 10/22 for existing ones and builds to come. I was also looking at NRA prone smallbore but those seem to be more single shot purpose built rigs or Anshutz guns. I'd rock any bolt though just for experience, don't I'd ever go as specialized as that. The more I think about it the more confused I get. NRL 22 would be my main competition I would like to do for fun but I'm working graves the next few local matches. I'll have to wait and see how it goes and what my son enjoys, doesn't mean much what I think he will like until he actually tries it lol. Any insight?

Taking weight and youth into account id get a tacsol xring in the hogue. You can put them in a chassis too. It will shoot same hole groups at 50 all day. Swap a cmore on it and burn down steel challenge stages. I don't consider the rpr or the rar target youth friendly, they are just sized for adults. The target is much lighter but may still prove to be a bit much. You can still show up to a precision rimfire club match and win with an xring.

I went RPRr for my boy and threw on a LW barrel.

Shoots pretty good. I wanted the adjustable stock for him.

Looking back on it and the money into it. Maybe should have got a RAR and had a smith drop a Kidd barrel on it. Guy over on RFC had that done with a Kidd LW or ULW barrel and his RAR shoots amazing and weighs pretty decent. Bet he is into it less than I am.

Ejection on the RPRr has been great

Still not sure what I'll do, gonna go across town to Sportsman's warehouse and see if they have them in stock to handle and see how they fit. Maybe just get a 10/22 compact and throw a light barrel on it. I'd like him to get used to a bolt action though. Maybe I'm just old school but it still feels like the bolt should be more accurate lol. Plus I think the NRA smallbore is actually supposed to be shot single shot? Still trying to learn the rules and see what fits each competition

If you do the 10-22 one of the lightest barrels is a beyer tapered barrel.

Over on RFC a guy made one with a Leupold scope (2-7), 1 piece DNZ scope mounts, and black hawk axiom stock, I think and after it was said and done it came in under 6 pounds and maybe close to 5.

I was having the same issue trying to decide then i was introduced to the Tikka T1X and i from there it was hands down Tikka T1X i love it everything about it is smooth and works flawlessly and thing i didn’t like was the mount for the scope rings but i ordered the rail mount it’s made for and problem solved
