After trying (unsuccessfully ) to get any info from Ruger on how purchase an American target model, I happened to notice one on the shelf at a local cabelas.

A few things I noticed that I didn't realize beforehand,
First the bolt was quite stiff when locking down in the forward position, even with the extended bolt handle ( which is very nice by the way ). However after a through cleaning and a hundred or so bolt cycles it has improved dramatically. Even if it didn't get any better with more use, I would be perfecly happy with it.

Second, the barrel and action are blued not matte black. It looks nice and is a better bluing job than I would have expected on a rifle in the price range. The Ruger website says the finish is blued but some of the photos looked darker to me.

The overall fit and finish are better than I was expecting. It "feels" much like a wood stocked 77/17 target, it is not heavy or awkward and unlike the plastic stocked Americans it doesnt feel like a toy.

I was very curious about the accuracy and after a through cleaning, I made it to the range today for sight in and initial accuracy testing. (More through accuracy testing will be added, this was just sight in and preliminary testing to make sure everything was good to go ).
Test scope was a simple Bushnell fixed 10x with mildot reticle in Vortex low rings.
Conditions were less than ideal with 35* and snowing but there was no wind so I went for it.

@100yds 5 shot groups of cci 17 vmax were 1.25" bottom right. And 1.5" top right.
@100 yds 5 shot group of Cci 17gr TNT HP did a little better at 1" exactly, left center target.
Just for fun I shot a 5 shot group with the TNT HP @ 200yds and was surprised to see a group size of only 2.1" and only 1.2 mills low.

I just restocked and built up an older Savage 93r17. Went out with about a half dozen+ different loads and did the same. The CCI A17 and the CCI 20gr Gamepoints worked the best for me. Just a bit under MOA. I was surprised how much fun I was having shooting this thing...

They are a hoot. What optics are you using? I have a Sav 93r17 also. Mine seemed to prefer the HP ammo for precision tgt groups. 0.600-0.800" at 100y in perfect conditions off of a bench was about all it could do. They are great fun for plinking at long ranges. 200y or even longer. It is a MOA or slightly better rifle most of the time. That is not that great by benchrest 22 stds but it comes into its own out past 100y.

Im just running the same fixed 10x Bushnell the OP is using. It was sitting on the shelf collecting dust so... Tossed a Triad pack on it to raise the comb a bit. Its perfect now. 200yds was a snooze. Got it to about 325 so far, all using steel. Its just a fungun and basics trainer for me. I was looking for a project and it called at me from the rear of the safe. Total investment was about $200 plus my time and some Norrells MolyResin. Made up some dope cards off the initial data and AE. Will shoot it more next week and see how far I can stretch it. I think Im prolly pretty close now, maybe another 75yds.

Thanks. I was surprised how fun it was too. I have had the gun probably 10 years now. It came with one of those plactic stocks that would be too small for a teen. I had tossed a Sweet17 scope on it and kept it at the cabin for the kids. Then it migrated home to the safe where it sat. Never really impressed with it. Like stated, I was bored and looking for a simple project. Along with the stock, bottom metal and knob, I went cheapo and did a "interwebs triggerjob" on it. I figured the worst that could happen is an order to Midway for a RifleBasix trigger right? A bit of patience, stoning, and time resulted in a very nice trigger and some education on my part...all a good thing.

Even with a light crosswind, those little bullets wander when they get past a few hundred yards! That was the biggest eyeopener for me. Tons of fun. Good practice on wind, and fairly cheap...and no reloading!
