Ruger GunsiteScout Rifle

Re: Ruger GunsiteScout Rifle

Run a quick search of the Hide (click the link in my sig line). There have been a couple pretty recent threads, including some first-hand reviews from new owners.

Re: Ruger GunsiteScout Rifle

Thanks, that is about what I expected. Most of the Ruger Bolt Guns I have bought are not exactly tack drivers... Where as ALL 0f my Remington Factory Hunting rifles shoot sub MOA with the right handloads. I've got a couple of Winchester Featherweights that will do the same. But I'm still strangely drawn to this Butt-Ugly little Gunsite rifle. I wonder what the Late Great Col. Jeff Cooper would think of it ??? BTW, I personally sold Col. Cooper a Steyr .376 Jeff Cooper Scout Rifle Model while I was working in the Firearms Wholesale Industry. I found it very strange that Steyr Did Not present him a Rifle with his namesake & signature on that model... Doesn't Say a whole lot for Steyr MFG, does it!!! Anyhow, thanks for the reply. Guess I will have to buy the Ruger Gunsight Scout Rifle, and learn the hard way that Ruger's rifles are just not real accurate. It ought to be a heck of a Hog Gun here in Texas, tho.... It doesn't get much better than sending 10 rounds of .308 ammo down range at Swine, unless we were shooting Muslim Jihadist in the Middle East...
I'm sure it will be plenty accurate for that + make a great truck or 4-wheeler gun. Any one else out there that has had 1 of the Ruger Gunsite Rifles, please advise on the accuracy & your experience with this rifle...

Re: Ruger GunsiteScout Rifle

I have a ruger compact... similar setup. only in 243, not an accurate rifle at all. dropped a deer at 375 with it once but I would say that was more luck than me or the rifle.

But still considering though this is almost the same rifle... I still really want one. mostly for the dbm

Re: Ruger GunsiteScout Rifle

Quick note.

I got a hold of a Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle. The bird cage flash suppessor is beyond ugly, the bottom metal is NOT metal, the stock is laminated wood (I'm a carbon fiber / Kevlar guy), and the iron sights are a great idea executed poorly. I really need to find some sort of "Springfield Armory M1A" sights upgrade for this rifle.

That a LOT of negatives in a row, and yet this rifle really earned my respect!

I fired 138 rounds through a Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle. Those were the first rounds ever fired in the rifle. As in no barrel break in. I was intentionally hard on the rifle trying to simulate "field abuse". The only thing that slowed me down was mirage so thick it was like shooting through a waterfall.

I started out with 20 rounds of 168 grain FGMM, moved to 20 rounds of 175 FGMM then to various hand loads, most based on the 168 grain A-Max and 45 grains of Varget. A few mil spec 168 grain HPBT pushed by 45 grains of Varget were also fired as were 5 rounds of 178 grain SuperFormance ammo which shot the worst.

Except for lots of Shooter error (always on the 4th round of the five round group) the rifle shot 1 MOA and under at 100 yards. I had two different ten shot groups that impacted so close together that only eight holes are easy to discern.

This was done with a cantilever AR uni-mount turned around backwards and a Bushnell 6-24 mounted as far back as possible for eye relief. Looked like a total cluster f#ck but shot way beyond my expectations.

I knock the two "horns" off the back of the Alpha mag so it could seat properly. I ran 4 AICS and 1 Alpha mag with no problems whatsoever. And we are talking about a $750 off the shelf rifle.

The short of it is that this rifle earned it's stripes and is now my go-to rifle.

might try to do a proper range report at a later date.
