Ruger Precision 308

Hey everyone, new to the forum. Wondering if anyone has experienced inaccuracies with their Ruger Precision 308s. We have 4 that we started running a little over 1 year ago. We have consistently shot the same lot of Hornady TAP 168gr AMAX ammo with approximately 450 rounds through each platform. The inaccuracies that we have experienced have been 1-2inch round shift at cold bore and inability to consistently place rounds within 1-2 MOA with 3 to 4 round groups at 100yds. Against our wishes the rifles were purchased with key mod rails which required us to mount a separate piece of picatinny rail to properly mount our Harris bipods. There has been a noticable amount of shift in the form of "rolling" (although it is only marginal maybe by millimeter measurment) between the bipod and the key mod mount when the rifle is placed on the ground with bipods in use, but we are unable to replicate the movement when simply trying to move the bipod by hand. We are hoping in the future to try various types of ammo to possibly have better consistency with cold bore and grouping. It should be noted that all mountings have been torqued and lock tite has been used. Any insight or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve had my gen 1 RPR .308 for a few years now. I found it to be picky about two things. First is ammo. I found no ammunition was more accurate than ammo I load myself. Every rifle is different, and you can customize your rounds exactly for yours. However, the factory ammo that worked best was Nosler Custom Competition 168 gr. It did just ok with Hornady, and horrible with Federal. But the Nosler shot a .177” 5 round group.

The other thing was the handguard. But more specifically, which bipod you attached to it, and whether or not you loaded it. With the Samson handguard my Sinclair Tactical was the most accurate and didn’t like to be loaded. It actually liked a bit of free recoil. With the Harris it liked to not be loaded, but liked a very firm grip, and to be shouldered tightly. The Paper City handguard I have on it now likes the Harris best, and likes it to be loaded.

I will also say I never got any flex at all out of the Samson handguard. I’d take it off and take a look at the nuts and thermal bushings to make sure there aren’t any issues there and also make sure everything is torqued correctly. If all looks good, I’d try some different ammo and maybe some different supports

Not quite to your question, but I have a gen 1 6.5 creed RPR, and 2 other family members also have either a gen 1 or gen 2 6.5 Creed RPR and all 3 are absolute hammers. I haven't shot much factory ammo through mine, but I have shot some Hornady precision hunter 143gr eld-x and some hornady match 140 eld-m, and both of those were well under 1 MOA.

The most I have shot it without cooling was at a small local match we did 40 rounds in a 20 minute time limit at 100 yards at different targets. None of those groups were over 1".

My cold bore shots are maybe .3 MOA off. It's not bad at all.

I'm using M118LR on the RPR 308 - It's my "beater" and student rifle - Thing is an absolute hammer.

We don't really have the ground to open her up around her but, I'd be willing to stake a guarantee.

My suggestion to you would be to simply replace the barrels. LRI offers replacements, as do a few others - It's a very easy swap and I think your armorer is beyond capable if they're qualified on AR's.

I have a gen1 that was originally chambered in 243. It would group the first 4 or 5 rounds well enough, but then open up to 2 moa. Didn't matter what ammo I used. It seems that as soon as the barrel got even the least bit warm, accuracy went out the window.

A significant number of the early gen 1s left the factory with bad barrels. My chamber was way out of spec too. I put a custom barrel on it and problem solved. It now shoots sub 1/2 moa consistently.

I don't know if that's an option for you, but it worked for me.

My .308 gen 1 is a beast. Not too picky on ammo, about everything shoots 1moa or less (including steel case tula and the likes). Ruger barrels in particular tend to be hit or miss, mine is wrapped in a StraightJacket. Fired its first 10 rounds of Remington premier 165gr into a quarter at 150 yds. I also use Impact Weapon Components mount-n-slot (or something) key keymod bipod adapter for all my keymod handguards. Works great for Harris bipods, because it allows the base of the bipod to sit tight to the handguard.
