Ruger Precision in 300 Win Mag, preferred ammo?

Hi all, glad I found this forum.

We got a Ruger Precision in 300 Win Mag and are taking it to the 100 yard range shortly.
Vortex Venom 5-25x56mm scope, Accu-Tec Bipod.

We have 150 and 180gr ammo in stock, the 150 is Winchester Power Point and the 180 gr I can't recall offhand, I think Federal Power Shok.
We have:
FEDERAL 300 WIN MAG 190 GR SIERRA MATCHKING BTHP
BARNES PRECISION MATCH OPEN TIP 300 WIN MAG 220GR
coming this week.

Anyone have experience with the RPR in 300 Win Mag and if so, what ammo is it liking for 100, 200, 300+ yards?
We'll be shooting 2-300 in a couple weeks and hopefully 1000 yds in the spring time.

I shot it at 25 yds yesterday and it's same hole with the Winchester Power Point 150gr.

With a 1:9 twist 26-inch barrel, you will find the 190's to be ok, but I would look at the Federal 215 Bergers. They are tack drivers in my 1:9 24-inch Rem.

Another one you might want to try if you can find it, is the Nosler Match Grade 210 Grain RDF Hollow Point ammo. I ahve been looking for it and have yet to find it, but I think it might work out with the 1:9 twist.

Those Barnes 220's shoot VERY consistently out of my 300wm. I expected the 190's or 215's to be the ticket, but the Barnes really shined from 350-700 yards. Oddly, I got some Barnes blem ammo in the 220gr that actually shot better than the premiums. I kept a batch special for next elk hunt as a 5 shot group's close to the same hole at 235 yards (distance where my designated elk spot is).

Most 300 WM shooters are shooting the Berger 208's, 215's and 220's when we can get them, like me, though I do have a box of Nosler RDF 210's that I should try out to see if they are a good substitute for the 208/215 Bergers. The people that are shooting the 225's from Hornady are the 300 PRC owners, and aftermarket ammo for both has been dwindling since the release of the more popular 300 Norma that has been steadily gaining with hunter's and ELR enthusiasts in the past few years.

You are around the same speed (3001 fps/915 m/s) that everyone else is getting with the 220-225gr bullets with your COAL of 3.700" (94.04mm). Though with that COAL, factory ammunition is lacking since it has such a far jump to the lands. This is why I went with a COAL of 3.600" (91.44mm) because I use it to hunt with as well as target, so if I need ammo on the spot, I can at least buy it.

As far as loading go's, I use VV 565 as well and Accurate Magpro, and I get around 2900 fps (884 m/s) with 220's with a 24-inch barrel (731.52cm) Some of the other powders that have worked out are Alliant Reloader 26 and Hodgdon H1000. But I try to stick with VV 565 and Magpro since I do not like compressed loads.

Did you change the barrel on your Ruger PR or did come factory with the 94.04mm COAL?

It is factory. Just purchased, not 100 shots yet. This is a recipe I got from a friend who has an RPR 300 win mag and has had good results. However, I measured the COL, which came out to be 93.15mm with the ELD-M 225 gr. So I'm thinking of trying a new recipe with reduced grains to 565 and COL from 91.15 to 91.55, i.e. to be 1.5 - 2 mm from the grooves to reduce vibration and collect the group. I'm afraid that with 94.04 the band opens up long distances. I will try this thesis.
