Ruger Precision Rimfire Won't Zero?

Hello,

I bought a Ruger Precision Rimfire about a week ago and got a Vortex Tactical 4-12x scope with a one-piece $100 ring set. It is my first rifle with a scope, my only other Rifle is an AR-15 with a reddot.

Anyway, I got tried to mount the scope myself through youtube videos. It didn't go well. Went to the range and it was about 2.5 feet above paper. No worries, I chalked it up as a learning lesson and took it to Cabelas to have them re-mount it and laser boresight it. They told me they had the same issue, and even put a different scope on it they had around and couldnt get it on paper?!?!

Is it something to potentially do with the 30 MoA rail? The scope and rings I have are brand name good items.

The rifle just didn't have the screw for the hand guard when I got it also, is this rifle just a lemon?

Does the one-piece ring set have any additional elevation (MOA) built into it?

Sounds like it might be an issue for the combination of the 30 MOA rail and the one-piece ring set . . . .if it's mounting high.

I assume you're talking about the Vortex Diamondback Tactical. . .??? 70 MOA adjustment is plenty (35 in each direction from center).

How high is the scope when mounted (center of scope to center of bore)???

And, like kl3309 asksed, it'd be nice to know if that one-piece ring set has any elevation.

The good news is . . . if it's a problem with the scope, Vortex will replace it for you at no cost (except your shipping to them).

Rings have a 20 MOA slope... So I am out $100?

Better to replace the 20 MOA slope ring, or to get a 0 MOA replacement rail?

The scope is level though? Shouldn't it still be on paper?

Yup . . . you've found the problem.

And having the scope somewhat high adds to the problem.

Probably easier to find a 0 MOA ring set than a 0 MOA rail. And stay away from Cabela's.

I wouldn’t use a one piece mount and would get individual rings to get the scope down as far as possible or you might run out of cheek weld adjustment on your buttstock. Atleast I had to do that

Correct me in I’m wrong, but if OP was desperate to make his current setup work, couldn’t he turn the Nikon Mount around and have a resulting +10MOA instead of the +50MOA he currently has now? Not ideal, but that would work, right? Would obviously have to remount the scope.

That's a good thought and if it were me, especially if I couldn't return the Nikon Mount, I'd give it a try and see what kind of eye relief I might have.

Well at 30" above 100yd POA, you should be dead on around 300-350... Lol.

Call/email Ruger and they can send you a 0 MOA rail. Another member here (I think) called for similar reason and they sent him a flat rail at no cost.

That should resolve the issue and you'll be about 5-10moa off the top of your travel giving you 50-60 moa travel to use for dialing solution.

All you need to do is call ruger customer service and they will send you a 0moa mount for free, if you want to try and keep that scope mount... I have basically the same glass on mine and used the leupold high rings on mine and it was almost zero'd right away. 3 quick adjustments and it was banging quarters all day long at 50yards.

Your 30 MOA rail should be ok. Remove the one piece rings. Get a set of Burris Signature ZEE Rings and a set of inserts, the ZEE are for Pic rails. They have a total of 40 moa of adjust for a 1" rings, 20 MOA for 30mm rings. the Zee's can go any way you need to go, up, down, right, and left. I have had gun that I could not get them zeroed right or left. If the rail is too much, the Zee rings can take some of it out. The inserts protect your scope, no ring marks. One set of inserts comes with a pair of .005", .010" and .020". you would need two set to have 40 MOA.

With that mount you have 50 MOA total. The scope may be level but your barrel is angled up 50 MOA.

What distance do you intend to shoot mostly?

I have a Vortex Diamondback HP 4-16 with Warne Maxima rings (Cabelas stocks them about $35) and the stock 30 MOA rail zeros at 50yds no problem.

I'd sell the AR based mount and get the Warne's.

Just bought my 8yr old a RPRR and threw a Vortex AMG on it temporary until her scope comes in. Cannot get a 50yd zero with that oem 30moa rail. POI are still about 6.5" high at 50yds. Current mount has 0 moa built in. Hoping her Burris RT-15 can zero at 50yd. My Savage TRR-SR .22lr with 25 moa rail has no issues with it's Bushnell Forge.

They will send you one free of charge.

Flip the one piece and go shooting. Wait until you build some skills with a scoped rifle before you spent more money.
