Ruger RPR vs Tikka t1x vs CZ 457

Hi guys,

I'm up here in Canada, the Tikka and Ruger are pretty much the same price (new). The CZ is about $200 more.

Going to be doing some long range shooting and want an accurate platform to star that is worth upgrading (chassis etc).

I've read through the stickied RPR forum but i'm too much of a newb to understand if there is a significant difference between RPR and the other options in terms of base accuracy before upgradess...

Recommendations?

With those prices it’s a no brainer to go with the Tikka.

My limited understanding:

The RPR has barrel and trigger upgrades, the stock is what it is

The T1X has multiple stock upgrades, as it can drop in most any stock that fits the T3X; has barrel upgrades; and has spring options for the trigger

The 457 from CZ seems to be a one off at the moment, as it has a different action than the 455, so what you buy is what you get... model based of course.

CZ 457 uses the same barrels as 455. There are plenty of stocks to choose from: Boyd’s, KRG in a few months, XLR, MPA, Oryx.

just look at Area 419 to see what available for the 457. it's quite a lot.

There’s a chassis on the market for the 457 from Indian Creek Design. 4 different fore end options...accepts pretty much an AR15-style hand grip and any buttstock that works with buffer tubes

OP is in Canada, IBI makes a Tikka T1 prefit and I think read in the Tikka thread it will be available in the US at some point this year

It is for a couple of reasons, personally over the other two options

- AR style safety
- bolt adjustment allowing longer travel to simulate a larger centerfire riffle
- adjustable pull and comb height stock out of the box

Honestly I’m the last guy to bash a gun, but the ruger has no place anywhere near a precision competition without a bunch of money thrown at it. The long bolt travel is a cool idea I guess, but the stock is flimsy/flexy, the barrel is hit or miss (mostly miss from what I’ve seen), the trigger is meh at best, who cares about an AR style safety when you have the same hit ratio with it on as with it off lol.


Ok that may have been harsh, but it doesn’t belong in the same class as the t1x or the cz 455/457 trainers. I’m a big ruger fan and I gave this thing alllllll the ammo from as cheap as FGMM to as expensive as center x and everything in between. It’s only consistency was its inconsistency.

I have a 10/22 without much money in it, he’ll the barrel is only a KSA, and it shoots bug holes at 50 with 10 different types of ammo and rings 6-8” steel at 300 without issue. I never even shot a sub moa group with that RPRR junk when I’ve got stacks of .7 MOA at 100 and 1.1 at 200 with 6-8 dollar a box ammo through my 10/22.

The idea behind it was great, but they should have been 100 higher on MSRP and put a freakin quality match barrel on it. How can it be a precision trainer when you never know if you missed the wind call or the gun just Can’t shoot that 8” plate at 300?

Ok no more ranting. I was just severely disappointed in that gun and I’m farrrr from the only one.

I've been waffling back and forth between that and the tikka, but I'm trying to stay at base class for some nrl22 matches. The msrp between the tikka and a decent scope makes me lean that way.

Accuracy with stock barrels seems like they're very competitive based on my research.

It's not unfortunately, but it is quite readily available when there is stock to us through irunguns -

I considered this model but I have also another issue - really high cheekbones that I don't think would work with the AT-ONE stock. (AT-ONe has < 3/4" adjustment on comb).

On my ruger american rimfire, i've been using the high comb attachment meant for scopes, with the iron sights. With the "normal" comb meant for irons i'm far too low. Vice if I use a scope, i'm looking near the bottom of the scope, nowhere near where I want to be.

This leads me to believe I will need more than usual height adjustment on the cheek rest - I am hoping the aftermarket stocks will allow me to do this...

I wouldn't touch the Ruger and I'm a huge Ruger fan just not a fan of the look and feel of it. I have both the Tikka (bavo) and the CZ 457 trainer.

Love both the CZ and Tikka and couldn't pick between them, so get them both!

I took a look at it, the chassis look really nice. I am new to shooting so would you mind let me know if it's a better options than the mdt chassis? I am currently considering these 2 options as they are both lightweight. The MDT chassis is like $100 cheaper and they said it had this "v shaped bedding" that increase accuracy. I emailed Indian Creek Design for email and got some decent information with pictures of what it look like. However, i do not know what does it have over the MDT chassis for higher price. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

So the MDT LSS chassis has what I refer to as an “itty bitty baby fore end”...mean that once you toss on a Harris bipod or the like there is very little room left to put your hand.

The LSS is $400 USD. The Indian Creek Design MoFo is $400 with the Tommy or Slimmy fore ends...$430 with the Hero AR Handguard adapter fore end, or $450 with the Johnny fore end.

The ICD MoFo chassis uses an interchangeable fore end design..so it’s the same main chassis body for all the fore ends, that can be changed out at any time should you want to change the style of your fore end. The price of the chassis only includes ONE fore end. You DO NOT get all 4 fore ends with the chassis. You can purchase them separately if you wish to change it up.

The Tommy and Slimmy handguards will give you the length of a typical stock that comes on a rifle, so even after putting a Harris bipod or the like on it you still have plenty of room for your hand on the fore end.

The Johnny fore end is 3” longer than the Tommy/Slimmy fore ends. The Johnny has an Arca-Swiss rail running the length of the bottom of the fore end, and it also has M-lok slots running the entire length of the fore end on all 3 sides. These 2 things give you many options on ways to attach bipods, shooting bags for competition use, or basically any other thing you may want to put on the fore end of a rifle.

The Hero AR Handguard adapter will allow you to purchase the AR Handguard of your choosing and attach it. This will give you complete control over style, overall length, attachment options, etc.

So yes, in my opinion, it is a better option than the MDT LSS.

As I haven’t seen both models in person, I can’t give you a for certain answer on that. I do know the guys that are running the MoFo on their 455’s and 457’s are loving them. I can wholeheartedly say that ICD would not release a product that would hurt your accuracy.

All this talk about modifying firearms why not just buy a vudoo no modification needed oh and I have a CZ and Ruger rpr my Ruger sheets very well not as well as my vudoo not as well as my 10/22 with volquartsen parts the voodoo you can have it built however you want whatever stock I wouldn't spend a bunch of money on those cheap guns I just put it in the best vudoo

I don't know it just seems to me you by the firearm and then change all the parts while complaining that the Ruger does does not come stock with all these parts so why not change the parts out on the Ruger like the other rifles you're talking about parts are available but all my Ruger shoot very well I've had a 10/22 since the sixties Model 77 in 22-250 that are some of the most accurate rifles I've ever shot even compared to my Annie's model 54 so I don't know how you can say 1 guns much better after you change all the parts but ruger's bad without changing all the parts just something to think about not arguing what's great is being able to have a choice but I'm just saying if you're going to buy one and change every part on it why not just start with the Annie or a vudoo action or maybe a Annie Fortner
